i tried smallville, flash, arrow and the recent supergirl. imho all the dc shows of this century are crap-

If you're going to start watching Arrow, watch the 2nd season first. It's by far the best, there's a season 1 recap episode floating around the net somewhere. Starting with Season 3, it does cross over with The Flash, so if you're not watching both shows you do end up feeling like you're missing out of something.
Flash is more of a fun show, The Flash's rouge's gallery is full of utterly ridiculous villains. Instead of trying to reinterpret them as something serious, it just rolls with it as is (Telepathic Gorilla? check Giant manshark? check)

Season one is pretty meh. He kills people. He goes by the name "the hood". He doesn't really have the supporting cast like he does in later series.
I'd agree starting at season 2 might be better. It's really drastic how much the show has changed from the first season. It has metahumans, supersoldiers, magic and ninja assassins. Ollie is called Green Arrow and has other vigilantes/superheroes he teams up with.
It's not a great show by any means. But season 4 is fun, it's like comics with huge fights and ridiculous costumes.
