I just got finished watching a review for Real Heroes: Firefighter on gametrailers.com. From what I saw, the game looked pretty awful, and deserved the low score it received, but it got me into thinking, could a decent firefighter game ever REALLY be made?

Every Firefighter game I've heard of so far has either been sub-par, or just plain awful. My roommate's little brother says he knows of a good firefighting game in the arcade; but that's open to debate, since he's only ten, and I've never played it myself.

So, do you think a good Firefighting game could actually be made?

I actually remember a firefighter game that I used to play on the ps1.
It was very easy but oh so fun. Too bad I couldn't play it anymore after my cat broke my *cough*modded*cough* ps1.

Maybe, it would help if it was a 3rd person game. I cant really see how they would do it as an FPS. There have been a few attempts with mostly arcade games but they werent too good. I guess its worth a try, they would definitely have to embellish a lot of what a fire fighter actually does.
When have you ever seen a game that does not embellish what the player does relative to IRL activity?

I remember one in the arcade I used to go to, that was pretty fun. Forgot what it was called but you held a life size fire hose, and just sprayed fire with water. Basic stuff. Fun tho!

What about that bus driver game?

Possibly. I could see one working well if it were similar to the Ghostbusters game. (3rd person, replace proton pack with a fire hose.)

When I saw this thread, I instantly thought of this.

Many childhood hours spent playing that horrible game.

I don't think a game could really get across what firefighters actually go through when going through burning burning builds. The intense heat, claustrophobic feelings etc.

It's possibly the same situation as army\war FPSs, they have pretty much reached the limits of displaying whats its like on a battlefield with the technology that is available.

It could be possible to make a good firefighting game, maybe if it was in the same style as Rainbow6 or SWAT4, where you have the ability to order around your guys to coordinate what you or doing, or being able to pick different entry points into buildings, and each one requiring different strategies.

I think I remember playing the demo of that. or a similar game.

if they used the fire physics from, say, Alone In The Dark or Farcry 2, then it would probably be quite good.
although slightly repetative.

If you added a bit of sci-fi twist to it...

The future...

...and evil robots. Ah there it is.

There IS decent firefighting games - strategies, that is. First/third-person firefighter games apparently have some curse placed upon all them.

yep, cutting through a 12 year old girls leg with the jaws of life to get her out of a totalled burning car sounds like a barrel of fun...

Not until they get procedural fire to look good...

I mean... really good. There'll be a lot of water physics to contend with too.

Problem is: if they went with a realistic game which, let's face it, is the only way they can go (see that wierdassed McQueen guy from the PS1) any let down in the physics will dump the game ass deep in the uncanny valley hence ruining immersion and the quality of the game.

It'd be awesome. But it's a ways off. Next generation maybe?

Desert Bus? Yes. There are even a couple of successful games - flight simulator, train simulator, ??? - which do not embellish. The point being, these make up maybe a percent of a percent of all games. Predicting embellishment is like predicting the user interface is going to involve pressing buttons.

That arcade game ruled. End of story.

Unless fires turn people into zombies which you have to give the fire-axe treatment, I doubt it... wouldn't that be an awesome game, though?

You mean like in Burning Rangers? Firefighters are always much more entertaining when they can fly! Though the chance of Sonic Team ever doing a follow up to that one is rather slim these days.

perhaps if they did it like an x-com game?

You run the firehouse getting a budget depending on how well you do, invest in technology and training, for a storyline you could have a pyromaniac cult or something. Add in a post-fire investigation team to find which fires are accidental and which are intentional as well as M.O. Add preventative measures and early warning systems (smoke detectors and the like) to the tech tree.

Though whether it stays squad based or more like R6:vegas I'm not sure.
