I dunno. The question could be rephrased as: can Bioware write thought experiments that don't hinge on the oh-so-interesting choice between LG and CE? That said, I'd imagine an RPG without limited combat elements and a Picard/Kirk variation of the Paragon/Renegade meter could theoretically be good.
Hey, hey now- DA2 was the choice between CG and LE. Git yo shit straight, son.

OT: Probably, but I'd imagine that after working on ME and TOR for so long, they would want to do something other than scifi for a bit. Maybe... a DA 3? One that doesn't ultimately suck?

Also, what exactly do you mean, "without limited combat elements"? I'm pretty sure that any game would have to have limited combat elements, or it would never get made.

no
for one thing in a star trek RPG most of the characters would have to be members of a military organisation and Bioware doesn't do those well(remember everyone in ME has quit the military because they had some kind of beef with them or was really boring)

so far they have also always made fantasy games, star wars is fantasy with lazors and spaceships and the main story of ME with the ancients evil that has slept for generations is more like fantasy than scifi

Probably. But I doubt they'd ever pick up that ip. I would like to see them radically change their style though. It's getting stale.

Exploration? Mass Effect? Did you play a different game than I did? Was there a Mass Effect that wasn't just a terrible cover-based third person shooter? What was the exploration bit? Going around four square miles and playing frogger when you approached some rocks?

rather than Star Wars (space fantasy war story), and was wondering if that could possibly come to fruition. So, I ask you: Do YOU think that would be a good idea?
Unless we're counting the prequel trilogy I'd say that Star Wars was as much about characters as Star Trek. Noting how terrible an RPG Mass Effect is I'd be as happy with a Bioware RPG as I would be with a LucasArts Citizen Kane with foreground CGI dinosaurs and four Chinese provinces dedicated to manufacturing merchandise for it.

Yes they could. But I don't want them to. I want them to make a Farscape RPG that will serve as 5th season of Farscape because I will never get over the fact that it was canceled. And please don't mention that abomination of a movie.
I reckon Bioware could make an amazing Firefly or Babylon 5 RPG too. Farscape was awesome.

You know that might be right up their ally.
Really ? I don't remember Star Trek being about all these bullshit romances.
That's seriously off topic and kind of unnecessarily angry buddy. Also have you seen how many times Kirk fell for someone?
Yea, but you know Biowhore would 'expand' on that further and make aliens and even Spock a gay love interest.

Yes and we all know that this totally optional part of the game that takes up less than one percent of the game will run it into the ground right?
I think his point is that its completely unneccessary.

No, I don't think Bioware could do it because they would make it a useless trilogy, add in large amounts of romances for little to no reason, making it a covered based shooter and multiplayer and make the story some YOUR GOOD GUY X ACTION, YOUR A BAD GUY Y ACTION, YOUR A FUNNY DOUCHE ACTION Z! Then whore out everything for marketing for what I think is going to be a flop.

No, because I still don't trust them fully with Mass Effect 3 and didn't fully enjoy Mass Effect 2.
Yes because Mass Effect 1 didn't have cover based- oh wait...I mean it didn't market itself on romance and-oh wait, I mean you were a complex and three dimensional character not a generic action movie-oh wait. But the choices were complex and not black and white-oh wait. And multiplayer is total crap that always takes away from the experience, same a single game that had a decent campaign and good multiplayer, because no such game-oh wait.
I haven't Played Mass Effect 1. I don't think Mass Effect three is going to be the next best thing to crack cocaine. Star Trek had characters that you actually cared for, and if nothing else you cared for the ship because seeing that thing get blown up would be a masterpiece of explosions and property damage.

I didn't care about Mass Effect 2's characters at all because they never really made me care about the case of the universe in general. I literally just went through the game picking renegade options because like Yatzhee has pointed out, its either your Mother Teresa or Eating babies and there is no middle ground. I'd rather be a evil bastard having fun then a good guy having a even more boring of a time. I didn't like any of the characters because I jumped in a little to late to actually learn about them from Mass Effect 1, but quite honestly, I couldn't care less, since my responses to the actually characters would have been completely different then what Shephard would say. I think it would have been a nice option to slap each person who wanted to sleep with me before the final mission because this is no time to be making bonds when your about to die you *****.

Also having the surname Shepehard threw me very far out of the experience, having been just called "commander" would at least allow me to play as someone who I want to be, not some random bloak with a surname as common as grass.

No, I don't think Bioware could do a decent Star Trek game, simply due to their system of communication, since you only have three options it probably would be this. "Kill the bird of preys, rape their corpses and send pictures back to their families" 'Let them go, because they obviously can't help themselves from being assholes' and finally "Make a wise crack about how Klingons smell like ass" each one, in order giving you Bad, Good and Asshole points.

Also, in the future, if your going to tell me I'm wrong about something please just say it instead of sitting there passively aggressively doing it, because one makes you look like a prick and the other is you being honest.
I'm sorry, but I prefer passive aggressive to blandly charging out into the open, smashing on my keyboard with caps lock on. I prefer having a dry sense of humor as apposed to someone who comes across as having anger issues.

You struck me as one of those people that loved ME1 and hated ME2 because it dared to be different, hence the content of my previous post, I apologize for that. I can't really argue with your points (although I find them to be minor and I personally think that you're getting worked up over nothing though) but Bioware makes their characters in depth enough to make me care about their universe and I think they could do the same with Star Trek. Then again, I think that moral choice systems like the one in mass effect are actually good and fun, so what do I know? Personally I like to spice it up, going mostly paragon while throwing in the occasional renegade action when I found it to be fitting.

In terms of what Bioware's capable of, Mass Effect is so close to what a Bioware Star Trek Game would be as to make little difference. A good Star Trek game would have less violence and more philosophical quandary over pre-determined moral choice, but those aren't things Bioware cares for.

Funny enough, the romance stuff makes some degree of sense - in a long-running serial, everyone briefly hooks up with everyone else.

In all honesty, I imagine a Star Trek Game as something between Mass Effect and L.A. Noire.

I think they could. For the 6 or so hours that I played Star Trek Online, the ground mission/instance part of the game actually looked like it could be fun. If they'd actually invest into a quality game (as opposed to the newest trek game), a mass effect-styled 3rd person shooter rpg could work quite well.

Although, overall, I really don't expect much high quality stuff coming out of the Star Trek IPs.

How and why did you necro this thread.

It doesn't help that the "They already did, it's called Mass Effect" joke -- my only response to this thread -- was stolen over a year ago.

*insert forum rage here over thread necromancy*

OT: Contrary to apparently everyone else on this website who played the game, I actually quite like Star Trek Online, and I'd absolutely adore a single-player Star Trek game that combined ship-to-ship space combat with third-person adventure exploration, gathering, research, diplomacy, and the occasional shooter segment. Something to maybe bridge the gap between Starfleet Command 3 and, well, Mass Effect.

Woops, I was actually searching for the thread(s) about the new Star Trek game and somehow forgot to check the date on this one... thought this was a more contemporary discussion when replying... probably got carried away. Sorry :(

It's understandable.

At least you're not somebody who found a three-year old thread in a Google search and decided to join up just to necro it. ¬_¬

It makes sense to want to look up info on the newest one, though, since it was released with absolutely zero fanfare and review copies weren't even sent out to gaming outlets.

I dont think so. Star trek revolves around the federation which is IMO the most boring "faction" in the entire setting. Its what people expect from a star wars game/show/movie. Knowing Bioware they would probably try to do something interesting with the federation and really theres just nothing you can do without painting the federation in a different light.

The other issue is Star trek tends to be surrounding a specific ship or adventure. Sure there are characters but the collective whole tends to be more important. I dont think their style fits with that

That said, if they bit the bullet and made something new like a new race being introduced or did something cool with the Romulans they could churn out a good game. I just dont think Trek fans would enjoy it

im not sure bioware could make any good RPGs anymore. im sure they could make a decent star trek shooter; its not like star trek's expanded media has a high standard of quality as it is.

Not that I'd call myself an expert, but I have watched "All of the star trek" and played "all of the bioware games",
and manage to remain a strong fan of both. I even played all of my Shepards AS variations on captain kirk (or zapp brannigan from futurama, which is like the same thing anyways). I think it'd be pretty easy for bioware to make a compelling Trek game.

The whole "Shooting gallery with cutscenes" thing mass effect 2 had going would make perfect sense in a trek setting, as that's the format for a lot of their action sequences. The only real issue I can think of would be game-ifying the puzzle dynamic that the star trek episodes tended to be built around. Failing that shirtless kirk on spock gladiatorial combat makes for good bioware shennananigans.

Man, you weren't much of a DS9 fan were you.

Sisko/Kassidy
Kira had a couple other people besides Odo, and so did Odo.
Rom/Leeta
Ishka/Zek (ok, these two are pretty minor, but still repeat characters)
Dax/Worf
Dax/Bashier
Winn/Anjohl
Jake had a half dozen girlfriends, though I think all one shots.
Miles/Keiko, though that belongs as much to Next Gen

Bioware must be really sick of sci-fi by now- Mass Effect, Star Wars. I don't think we'd want to put all our sci-fi franchises in their hands. As much as I think they're great, Bioware is about characters. Star Trek is more about the story, I find.
