I mentioned this in passing in another thread, but who else out there will almost always play as the opposite sex when given the option.

I've found myself doing so more and more of late. I've been playing the Dragon Age series, Mass Effect, and Destiny as a chick. My first run is always male though. Damn, I can't really answer the poll. To extreme brah!

I usually do that a lot in RPGs that let me choose my character's gender, and which in this case is just me in Fallout games. I switch back and forth between which gender I do a playthrough as, usually flipping a coin in case I lose track. Although it's funny to help/screw over the Legion in New Vegas when playing as a female because of how anti-female they are. Feels like poetic justice. >:3

The poll mostly exists for the underwear joke :)

I've been doing the cross-dressing gamer thing since the Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight expansion pack. I hated using commonly used skins in deathmatch, so I always picked something I rarely saw in matches. For the original game, I played as C3PO instead of the default Kyle or Boba Fett (everyone was Kyle or Boba Fett), the expansion I went with Mara, the player character of the game.

It just stuck after that. I like being a unique snowflake :)

I've been playing almost exclusively female characters since...about halfway through Everquest. So...late 90's? No real formal reason. I just prefer it.

Eh, I flip-flop.

In a previous thread on the subject, just for the fun of it, I tallied all the characters I had ever made, or at least all the ones I could remember.

It came out a perfect 50/50 split between male and female.

Evidently I'm either indifferent or gender-confused.

I tend to play as female characters, mostly because I think there's something much more interesting about a well written and strong female character than a male one; with a male character, it becomes harder, maybe even silly to try to talk about gender issues or women in society.

That, and I don't tend to find the "stoic, brooding testosterone poisoned" male protagonist very interesting. Just boring and unrelatable.

It depends for instance in Skyrim where your gender has very little influence I always play a male. In games like dragon age or mass effect I tend to vary a bit although my first playthrough has almost always been male.

I'm the same. I don't really know why, I just pick whatever one I feel like playing at the time.
Even in MMOs my alts are a pretty even split.

I voted wrong. I thought it asked if I was a transgendered gamer. In the other sense.

Anyway, I would most likely come down 50/50.
In games where I can customize I usually go for my own likeness first, then my type of female.
In games where I can't customize, only decide F or M, I like to alternate depending on mood.
Then there are games with only male or female leads.

Don't worry about. I don't view the poll as particularly serious. The underwear gag will skew the results no matter what. I'm just following my own advice and trying to be positive. Just me saying, "here's something I love about gaming" and trusting people to be cool.

Damn you and your clever traps. I thought it was an honest poll when I voted!

Damn, I just realized the horrible error in my poll choices.

Women are mostly likely wearing women's underwear when they play video games, so how are they to answer.

The simplest solution is to play in the nude, especially if you live with someone who finds you attractive. Meanwhile I will pledge to only show my naked body to people who find me unattractive, because I think this is a fair trade-off :)

Ive always felt the idea of a gamer playing another gender in games (when optional) is better represented by the term transvirtual (a term coined by one of the Paizo editors I believe). It has a clear definition and the idea of "virtual" within the word reinforces the gaming side.

Transgender already has a strong definition within real sexuality and I dont think its right to pollute that term with other conotations that may or may not apply to transgendered individuals.

That aside. I play both genders quite a bit, usually whatever I feel fits the character better

For me it depends on the game. For single player RPG's like Bethesda offerings I will try to make myself first, but when i started playing MMO's I usually start with a female character and prefer to make female characters as alts. Though this fits in to a theme where my friend and I have this "recurring cast" of characters that we port over to other MMO's and that I now use in various games. But in general its split, leaning female but when a male character is the first choice, it is usually a game the feels more correct using a self insert not a constructed character.

No but I think I am starting to become one.

Originally on Guild Wars 2, I made a male Sylvari Elementist but I didn't liked the look of it but went with it. Some time later I got a Total makeover kit which allow you to redo your character again including gender so I try changing him as a female which I yielded much better result and keep my Elementist as female which I also bought a name contract to change the name to sound more female like.

Recently I also got hold of another character slot mainly to make short lived character just to get hold of Black Lion key for their chest (think TF2 crates) so I was making a bunch of random characters including female. One of them was a female Charr theif which I pretty much fell in loved it as in being far more appealing apperances (it mainly cos of her slender body and the leopard skin and pattern) than my current human male thief. Should I ever make that slot a pernament character, she will be made pernamanet (I screenshot the options I went in creating her).

I can honestly say this hadn't even occurred to me. I started with Cross-Dressing in the title but switched to Transgendered in the poll question largely because I wasn't sure what to call it exactly; these two terms were just the closest to what I meant.
Your word is cool though. If it had a wider usage and I knew of it, I would most likely had used it instead.

Anyway, hope everyone knows I mean no disrespect with my poor usage. I don't think this rises to the level of needing to edit the post, but if anyone thinks differently give me a PM and consider it done.

I generally play as male when given the choice, although there are exceptions. Like in Trine 2, my favorite character is the thief and I would almost always play as her unless I needed another character for a specific situation. And I suppose in Mount & Blade I sometimes play as female characters for the extra challenge.

I can very much enjoy playing a game as a female character though.

All other things equal I will virtually always play the female option. In WOW, for example, 4 of my 5 main characters are female. And the only reason I have that one male character is because back in the day I was a bit insecure and rolled a guy because I didn't want to be seen as strange. However, in borderlands 2 I play zero and axton because of the mechanics tied to them. I don't like gaige or maya's class.

Nah, it's pretty fine. I am mostly annoyed that no alternative exists for me. Being a transsexual woman I am by definition a transgendered gamer. Having played games seriously for most of my lives, being born with a penis and now having a C-cup. XD
