In Guild Wars, I have eleven characters, one for each of the professions and one PvP character.
Half my PvE characters are male, the other half is female. The character I play most is female though.
I like some variation.

I usually choose a female character because out of the two choices I think women look nicer, even pixellated or 3D bump mapped or whatever they do these days. Although if 'giant robot deathmachine' was a choice I would go for that every time.
S'pose a lot of it comes down to wether you see the charcater as 'you' or 'the lead role'.

I have to admit though, it does make me paranoid that people are only talking to me because they think I'm a girl...next charcater gets called "I am NOT a girl, stop trying to chat me up"

I've always played a male character by choice, though its a bit of a moot point to me. For example my first time playing wow "wow beta" I didn't realize it randomized your gender and you had to click the one you wanted, so i just grabbed a class and rushed. I ended up female, I didn't mind.
I think it mostly depends on what your looking for when you play a game. If your looking for a character you can Identify with or for a "main character to follow" Its like deciding if you hold the hand of a protagonist in a movie or If you want to script the movie about yourself.

Though i must say, my ex didn't like playing as a girl because you got slightly more abuse during the game. "wow" mmo's especially.

Well for me really it depends on what I'm playing. When I was playing WoW I would only play Priests and Mages as females because it just seemed like the right then. May seem sexist but I think spell chuckers should be female.
I don't think it's sexist as much as I think it's weird.
Well. And a little sexist.
It just seems weird to see a male doing the graceful movements that is spell casting. That's my thinking anyway.

It's generally not that graceful, but I can see your point.
Still, I like playing a caster, and I don't usually like to play female, so.
Yeah, well I also play Death Knights and Barbarians as Gnomes, so that just proves that I'm a bit off in my character creations.

Deja vu on the thread, but I usually have a save, one male and the other female.

I have a pattern; first character, male and looks (attemptedly) like me. If there is a choice-based system, he's good. Then a woman, simply to see what differences there are (i.e. Fallout 3, using the Black Widow perk to get through different situations), and she is often neutral or slightly evil. Then the third character is male, and the type who would take candy from a baby, eat it, then replace it with a chocolate bar filled with nitroglycerine and the tears of the baby's parents (gratuitously evil).

No real reason other than it can sometimes lead to different ways of doing things, and helps make the different characters more distinguishable from one another.

....Why yes.
Yes it does.
I likes the weird and wacky.

I'll play as both about equal amount of times, some games I'll go through it as both " if its an option" some games I use whatever seems to fit better for the story line and how it plays out to me... like with ME I tend to find the Fem-shep path seems to play out alittle smoother than male shep,

mmo wise again it really depends on the class... right now there is a certain mmorpg that is in closed beta right now that I prefer to use a female for most of the other race options, though if it's a human ____ prefer a male.

and with perfect world ( yes I admit to actually really enjoying that one) I flip between my female archer, and my male barbarian every other day or so..

I always play a girl if the option comes up; however, as much as I would like to say "It brings a new perspective to the Game" one of my major reasons for choosing a female, is because I will probably be playing the game for a very long time. So I choose a female because of my prefernce of girls sexualy, I know, this might come off as a little immature, and it is rightfully mature, and if im feeling a bit self-destroying, I would say sexist.

That is just my "Guilty" reason for why I choose female characters, there are plenty of other reason for why I choose female characters. I love empowering women, call me deranged, but I love it when I see my character in Fallout 3, shoot a Super Mutant's head off, and then reload to kill the Cenutar, all in one bulletime motion. Well, if this offends any women out there, for whatever reason it may be, I am sorry for your discomfort.

I usually prefer to play with women characters, but if the male models don't look hideous, I'll use them (and if the female models look ridiculous, I won't use them).

Guild Wars is my MMO of choice and the female characters are more well-crafted than the males, hands down. And they aren't overly boobulous either, which was impressive. They look like realistic females. The men just look like steroid abominations.

Constantly, because I play games as an escape from reality.
In reality I'm a man, to escape that reality I play as a woman.

^ I'm with these folks.

Although I sometimes play cross-gender in tabletop Role-Playing, too - which becomes a bit harder to explain.

I think with me, maybe is the whole escapist thing. If I can be a mighty warrior, or sorceror or whatever - If I'm already going to be a character I could never be in real life, why not go all the way and be female, too?

EDIT: I think the poster above, VincentMm just totally ninja'd me. Put it much more concisely, too.

I'm a guy, and I generally only play as female characters if there's a specific benefit to doing so.
E.g. Neverwinter Nights, being a female with high charisma lets you flirt with all the guards and get a free pass through checkpoints etc. And in Skate2 there's an achievement for changing your gender.

However in Guild Wars I have a few female characters, but that's just because the male versions of them look stupid.
