Cross-platform multi-player gaming has been realized (see Lost Planet), to allow PC and 360 owners to play with one another online. The question I have to ask is simple: does anyone really care? Is this really the next big advancement? Please post your thoughts.

i really don't care about it. the onyl game i ever saw it work for was Shadow Run, which was somewhat short-lived, and i think that the PC players had the advantage, because of the use of Mouse+keyboard versus Gamepad in an FPS game

I care. I'm a PC gamer, but most of my friends are 360 gamers. Cross platform online helps me and my friends play together.

It's great I have tons of friends that have L4D for the Xbox and I'd love to be able to play with them too. Some people ***** that its unfair because of controller differences but you can use an Xbox controller on the PC and a keyboard on the Xbox (I think).

Damn, I would love to pwn some consoletards.
This is the exact reason why it wouldn't work.

Cross platform games would be like chucking a match onto the tinder.

More people always make multiplayer more fun, unless the people are jerks.

I think its an awesome idea.

It sucks that Epic cancelled the PS3 vs PC play for UT3 because "they didn't want to delay PC owners enjoyment of the game". They could probably give PC owners an option to play on PS3 servers (if they have the proper update) but that would be more of a mess than a blessing I guess.

I'm a real supporter for cross-platform muliplayer. For instance; Left For dead. I got the PC version (I prefer the mouse & keyboard for FPS's) and love the game. However I quickly found a problem with my choice of platfom, all my friends have it for the xbox 360 rather then the PC. Why should I have to buy a game for the pltform I don't prefer (and for an extra $10)? This problem could easily be solved with cross-platform multiplayer.

As for the mouse & keyboard vs gamepad issue; If it means having more people to play with, I wouldn't mind playing with a few handicaps to be even with the console players.

Edit:

This is what i'm talking about.

Why wouldn't it be a good idea? It's the same game, why shouldn't I be able to play it with my friends? For example, I bought Unreal 3 for the XBOX, but shortly afterword, I realised that everyone else bought it for the PC and that the xbox community for this game will always be dead. Why can't I play with everyone?

In my opinion, what should happen is that I should be able to return any working game on one platform and get the same game on another platform for free (exchange).

It will help to bring down fanboys, so yes. It's a big idea. Not to mention that it opens up the number of available matches and games considerably.

I think the whole controller thing is nul and void. You can easily pick up a keyboard/mouse for a console or a joypad for a PC. I just think that no to gaming groups would mix well. Think about poor PC/PS3 gamers having to put up with the average 360 gamer.

The natural advantages of the PC over consoles (assuming that the game uses both) might unbalance the game. Shadowrun countered this rather well by making PC users lose accuracy when turning quickly, but it's still a problem. Also, PC users have access to mods. From mods that change the game's GUI to ones that let you see through walls, these players would have an unfair advantage.

On the other hand, if it's compatible with, say, the Xbox 360 and the PS3, then anything done to one game would have to work on the other. Any DLC would have to be released for both. Any updates would have to be written for both and updated at the exact same time. Still, while releasing a game for the PC and consoles would be difficult, having multiple consoles would just be challanging but doable.

I think it'd be a pretty good idea if they could make it work effectively. It'd be really nice to find matches faster and have more people to play with.
