This is something that peaked my interest earlier. Within video games such as Mass Effect and The Legend of Zelda, you are presented with the option of entering your own name. Personally, i tend to use the default option, however what do the rest of you choose?

In games where it doesn't really matter too much (like, the name is never going to be voice acted), it's kinda nice to have your own name in there. Mass Effect is a bit of a non-issue because the first name might as well be the name of the save file for all the mention it gets in the story. And picking a name in Pokemon is just neat as it brings you into the game just a tad more than if I made my name Red or Ethan for R/B & G/S respectively.

I did use Link in LoZ, though.

I tend to go for a mix of all three. For most games I'll put in my game. When it allows me to come up with something "witty" I put it in e.g. I called my guy in Dragon Age 2 Toma so that his name was Toma Hawke. But in certain games, like most Legend Of Zelda games, it seems wrong to call it anything other than Link

For games with text-based dialogue (which are therefor actually able to use the name you input), I normally go for a joke. LLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNGGGGGGG ago I read a gamer webcomic which one day suggested "The next time you play FF7, try naming Cloud "Dildo". It's fun!" And it most certainly was! :p

For games where the inputted name won't be mention anyways, I just go with the default since it doesn't really matter one way or another.

Usually default. If it's Pokemon I use my name and then call my rival something stupid like 'Fuckwad'.

I usually go with something serious sounding for the game's setting. I dislike silly names to be honest. Especially in mmos, when I see a name so bad its cringe-inducing, I can't help but to shout "WHY WOULD YOU NAME YOUR CHARACTER THAT YOU SPEND SO MUCH TIME AND MONEY ON SOMETHING THAT STUPID!?!?!?? WHYYYYYYYY......" I don't mind established usernames/personas.

I either do a proper name, or try and make it funny, but not crude. Also, playing the Legend of Zelda as "Ganon" never gets old.

I name my characters something serious for the game world... so no fagballs for me. There's usually a set few names i use for every game.
Although in MMOs i usually have slightly more abstract names.

EDIT: unless it's pokemon, them my rival sure as hell is getting called fagballs (or something equally stupid)

Sometimes I leave the default name, but more often than not, I choose something else. My Shepard is Alex, for example. I try to choose something that fits in the universe, though, no gag names.

For games that have default names, I use the default names. For games without, I have a list of names I tend to use (none of which are my own).

Depending on the game, I used one of many puns in my arsenal. My favorites being Sir Prize, Sir Loin, Sir Ender, Lord Lee, and Knight Maer.

Once when playing through KOTOR I thought I'd be clever and give the PC his actual name (if you've played it you know what I mean). It was pretty hilarious everytime it was mentioned as it was completely incongruous within context.

Usually if there's an option I'll call the PC reet. Thats just the name I use for pretty much everything.

Generally I'll name male characters Isaac and female characters Abe (No clue why).

But in some cases I'll name a character something specific like Link from the Zelda series.
And in other cases I'll use my real name if I want to be immersed in the world like Persona 4.

Rarely will I go for another name, like Badal Madraven for Skyrim.

I stick pretty much universally to the default. Since I don't consider the character as an avatar of me, I won't use my own name. Silly names get old really fast,

A witty name (unlike fagballs) generally some big scientific word, a word that is decriptive of the charter in the language in can imagine that charter speaking or if it is something that is not "human" but is very human like such as a the elder scrolls races and undead humans of all sorts but never on a race that is simply know as "human" or a synonym for human I will on occasion use my name.

I NEVER go with default even if i like the default and am not controlling the actual charter, i do not know why this is but say i have an army and a person gets a name like yet can change, i will in fact change their name to something else and give another army member their name. I just do not like using default names even if i like the default name.

You need more poll options. I don't call it something stupid like fagballs, I don't leave it as default, and I don't use my own name. I use names that are thematically appropriate to the game.

I tend to go with my own nickname, though sometimes I'll just come up with a witty and memorable name.
