By my own name do you mean my IRL name?
If so, then none of the above. Not the default name. Not my IRL name, and not something witty or funny either. Just a name I make up on the spot.

Mostly Rookie really, such as on Mount and blade I am Lord Rookie a deadly mercenary captain hell bent on destroying the polish commonwealth, then the world! :3

I went with 'Your Own Name', because it's the closest option. Unless it's a series with a defined protagonist like LoZ, I go with Bobmus. It's obviously not my real name (though Bob is one of my middle names), but it's pseudo-Latin, so blends in well in a fantasy setting, and is just familiar to me elsewhere.
I guess it is 'my own name' in that I came up with it, and have never seen it copied elsewhere...

If it's just a rental I'll probably keep the default but if I'm playing a while, I'll change the name.

For example: because I know the pattern of Bethesda games I changed the name of my orc to Some Dopy **** because I knew that he would be finding letters on assassins saying "We need you to kill Some Dopy ****."

For the KotOR games, I tend to go with Bron Gofai, because that was the randomly generated name I got when I first played KotOR when I was really little. For everything else, I go with the default.

Leave it at default. If I can't do that I'll just type in DanielBrown and be done with it. Never cared about naming in single player games.

Once when playing through KOTOR I thought I'd be clever and give the PC his actual name (if you've played it you know what I mean). It was pretty hilarious everytime it was mentioned as it was completely incongruous within context.
Oh, my God! That's brilliant! Time for a replay, I think, using his/her real name! That's truly hilarious!

I got Jake Stari, and I thought it fit my character, and I've used it in every Star Wars game, except where Republic Commando. I used it for Battlefront 1 and 2, as well.

I generally go with Red, because on consoles I'm too lazy to type redisforever in its entirety.
Either that, or R, which is the first letter of my real name. Again, really lazy here.

Sometimes I just use Zaul, sometimes I use an actual name like Kate or something. I used to use my real name for male chars but now I never play male chars, unless its like an argonian or something so no point being female.

+1 For Sally Shepard, and Kate started cos my 2nd Shepard had Kate Beckinsale's face.

I usually just go with my own name or Megawat.
I make exceptions for Nintendo games though, I'll always try to think of something funny there. Oh, and Mass Effect.
My last Shepard was called Commander (so he'd be Commander Commander Shepard). It made the conversation with Dr. Chakwas in ME3 pretty funny.

I like default names when they're available. Sometimes I hate naming characters. In Secret of Mana I called the characters "Boy", "Girl" and "Sprite".

I almost never change it to my own name. I do put in my name for Pokemon games but I leave the Pokemon names as they are.

I used to change names when I was a kid though. My Pokemon had super inventive names like 'Sparky' for electric types.

I used my own name in FFIX once, in place of Dagger/Garnet's for one game when I first got it, I was about 9 or so.

Voice-acted games ruined one of the greatest lulz farms of all times. Still, I always enter "my dick" or something on the off chance that somewhere, somehow, it will show up and be hilarious.

In Skyrim some group put a hit out on a "furfag," who "may be using an alias."

None of the above?

I named my Mass Effect character Miranda, which is not:

-default
-my name
-Something witty.
