ALL my characters are called Rob, Robert Rogers or Roberticus >Insert number here<

Not even called Rob. It was just the first name I thought of for Pokemon on the Gameboy with the 3 letter limit.

It all depends on the kind of game I'm playing. If its a game like "The legend of Zelda" or a final fantasy game, I usually stick with the defaults. If its a game that lets me design my own character, I try to come up with something clever, like naming my bounty hunter in SWTOR "Jayne" (unless all the names I wanted were taken, in which case I just cycle through the random names until I find one I like).

Link is Link.

For Elder Scrolls, I pick Shakespearean names. Cuz then I can pretend I'm smart.

I named my Redguard "Othello"... does that make me a racist?

I tend to use names that will fit in with the game universe. Boring, I know.

Although I did name my Argonian Robert L. Mead, after a friend of mine that used to make fun of my character names. He almost died laughing when he loaded up the save for that character.

I usually keep the default name. I just can't take the game seriously otherwise. Though when replaying certain Final Fantasy games where one character goes by a nickname (Red XIII or Dagger), it can be fun to use their real name instead. Or just name them something silly - they are practically asking for it anyway.

I did name Red XIII "Spot" once. Also, when my friend was playing FFIX and asked me to come up with a better name for princess Dagger, I suggested "Wedgie". Anyone who's seen her standard outfit from the back will understand why. These days, he always has trouble remembering the names of any FFIX characters, but any time the princess is mentioned, he identifies her as Wedgie right away!
