Depends entirely on the game. Either can work fine if the rest of the game is designed in a way that fits them. The Witcher 3's story would have to be completely redesigned if you make your own custom Witcher character, as Witcher 3's story is entirely bound up in Geralt's personal relationships and wouldn't work with any other character. Different types of stories will lend themselves to different types of player characters, and it just depends what type of story the devs are trying to tell; one type is not inherently superior to the other.

I can go with either, but I prefer creating my own. Mainly to avoid getting unsubtly railroaded into the faux-emotional story beats of a writing committee.

I prefered "both".

Games like Mass Effect, Fallout 4 and Dragon Age etc have a default character to put on the cover and advertised the game but still allow you to customised that face if you don't want the default.

Granted if I had to picked, then I guess the premade protagonist but it depend on the game really like MMORPG are NEVER aboud premade characters.

Now that's an interesting question. At the end of the day it depends of the game. If the game has a blank slate, but the path the game makes you take feels forced, then maybe a pre-made character would had been better. That also applies to the opposite situation, having a character totally fleshed out in a game that allows you to choose paths that are against the character's personality without any consequences (or reactions), then a blank-slate would had seem a more logical choice.
