Bullying is a tricky subject, cos the only real way to tell if something is bullying or not is if the victim thinks it is. And when it's like that, what to do about it just depends on your opinion, whether to send in the shock troops and dub the bully as spawn of satan, or give the victim a slap, and tell him to grow a spine. Except for in the really extreme cases, where it is obviously bullying (e.g. Kids follow another kid on his way home and roll him in shit every day for months), there's no sure-fire way to say if it's bullying, or if the victim is a wimp, it's not that bad, people are like that, stop whining and get on with life get on with life, etc.

sorry to admit, but i may have helped someone convince an absolute internet noob (you know the kind that starts a post in a forum to aggressively and is a total jackass?)to delete his system32 folder.

was quite funny because after we convinced him, he just never was seen again...in retrospect it may have been a bit harsh

I wish cyber bullying was a myth.

I've had my computer hacked with a key logger, which after the harassment seemed to have a climax in a bizarre civil email conversation with my hacker, who apparently thought I was cute , by emailing myself. While the hacker was nice enough to tell me how to remove the keylogger in the end, it basicly left such a sour taste in my mouth that I was paying hard earned money for this shit, that I pulled the plug on my internet connection and went back to just playing single player games.

On top of that, anyone who cares to look can see a number of facebook groups or before that webpages, dedicated to the hate of a person, encouraging as many people to join so they can show the person the hate is directed at just how much the world hates them. Use of sites like Hot or Not, where a cyber bully will post the most unflattering picture possible of their target and use the resulting score to break another piece off their psyche. There are even more damaging ways to cyber bully, but I won't even list them and give low level d-bags ideas, I've probably typed up too much as it is.

Cyber bullies are far more complicated that just chat, which I agree is easy enough to block or uninstall. There are friggin levels to this BS, hate is a pretty strong motivator. :(

Nah, it's the noob's fault for listening to strangers telling him to monkey with his computer. If you're gullbile enough to do that, then you don't need to be on the internets. In a way it could have been for his own protection, he might have gotten sucked into one of those nigerian email schemes.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that anyone who's experienced real-life bullying will tell you that "cyber-bullying" is pure bullshit.

Let me tell you guys a little story.

Kid gets picked on in real life because he's physically weak/nerdy/unpopular.

Kid/adult gets internet connection and discovers a world where physical ability means nothing, nerdiness is a virtue, and popularity doesn't matter because nobody really knows anybody anyways.

Adult proceeds to establish his popularity in an internet community by being funny in a cruel way (i.e. bullying others), exactly the same as he was picked on in real life previously. He does this because of his own low self esteem and need for attention, and completely fails to see the irony. His justification of this behavior is that the people he bullies are too stupid to defend themselves properly (actually they are often young children), just like he used to be too physically weak to defend himself properly from real life bullies. Again, the irony eludes him.

The internet: The real revenge of the nerds (petty and sad, as revenge always is).

Moral of the story? Being an asshole for your own amusement will always be justified by power. Either you're bigger, more popular, or smarter than the person you're taunting. Good for you. Pat yourself on the back.

Yeah, it's his fault!! His fault for not being as smart as those guys! His fault they abused their position of wisdom and took advantage of him! It's not like they could have just explained to him what the System32 folder was, so next time he'd know, right? And if he'd gotten suckered into a Nigerian e-mail scam, it'd be his fault too!

WAKE UP and realize that the victim ALWAYS gets the blame.

I love people like you. Really, I do. You're wonderful, the way you leap into the defence of anything and everything that might possibly need defending. I also have yet to meet one who isn't a raving hypocrite. I don't know you, so I might be wrong, but from experience people who are bastions of altruism are few and far between. As in nearly non-existant.

You want to be the hero who defends the stupid, go for it. But you're not really going to change human nature by shouting WAKE UP at the cheerfully malicious.

I've been involved in cyberbullying by banning the bullies from the small corner of cyberspace where I can do so. The annoying part is the snivelling and whining afterward; they're tough when dishing out punishment to others, but MAN can they not take it themselves.

He's pretty much got it. The problem with cyberbullieing is that it can and has translated into REAL bullying. It happened to me when I was in high school. Someone wrote and posted an embarassing story with me as the star. I didn't hear the end of it for months. And this was on top of all the other bullying I experienced. What did I do? I wore a video game shirt.

Star Wars kid was just 14. I doubt he had the wisdom to understand how it could hurt him. No one does at that age. I hope the poor kid has gotten some therapy and hopefully will be able to turn his life around.

I'm sorry, but it is just plain stupid to take computer advice from strangers, especially when those strangers have very poor opinions of you. Trusting other people without good reason is a one way ticket to disappointment. It was his fault for trusting a total stranger on the internet.

We got this lecture on cyber-bullying at school. I stopped paying attention at about the same time they began hailing the block button as the work of the devil and how ever mousing anywhere near it would instantly bury you in bad karma and cause a fairy genocide. The hypocricy of the anti-bullying campaign amazes me. It's like they try and force the idea of everyone being happy and nice and talking to each other down our throats. I don't like you, I don't want to talk to you, I'm not going to talk to you, oh quit whining, I don't see how I'm making your life miserable by removing the presence of someone who hates your guts.

But then I'm a heartless scrote and have probably missed the blindingly obvious reason why blocking makes me the devil incarnate.

Yes, I'm ranting now. Quiet, me.
Good Lord, are they still preaching that crap? Have they now moved on to promoting empty-minded doormat peace over IM as well?

Jeez, is this middle school or high school? or elementary school? (not trying to insult you here, you post quite intelligebly. Just trying to get a handle on this). that sounds like elementary school crap, man. Exactly how is the block button bad? have these people ever played xbox live unblocked? (well, of course not, that should go without saying.)

I think that, in schools and mainstream society nowadays, there's too little negativity. But, then again, one might argue that there's too much cynicism in the world. But kids shouldnt be trained to see the world as flowers and puppy dogs, and everyone will be your friend if you talk to them, and everyone is nice, yadda yaddah. I think thats what causes all these school shootings; confrontations are no longer allowed. In the old days, if someone was a dick to you, you punched him. if you were too small, you fought dirty and kicked and bit. then, after you beat the crap out of eachother, you got a slap on the wrist in the teacher's office, and that was that. Then, they started suspending kids for that stuff. Now, picked-on kids just bottle it up inside until they do something stupid.

People should be allowed to call things like they see them, be honset and realistic, and not be shushed for being too harsh and negative.

I Find the proper ballance is to be, outwardly, humorously cynical, but maintain an inner attitude of cheefulness. In effect, be lightheartedly negative. it's kept me sane so far.

Well, I think you kind of missed the point. Bullies nearly always invent some kind of excuse to justify their actions - they asked for it, they had to learn what the real world is like sometime, they needed to be taught their mistake, etc. My aim is not to defend the people who are routinely bullied on the internet, but to point out an important fact to the antagonists:

There is no legitimate justification for being a dick for laughs. It isn't helpful to anybody. It isn't necessary. A person can much more easily be taught the same lesson in a helpful way. As I said, it's just a power trip. I'll be honest here - I do hate the abuse of power. Call me a hypocrite if you want, but it bothers me enough when I see it that I usually feel obliged to speak out.

I know that you can't change human nature - please don't insult my intelligence by suggesting that I think so - but sometimes you CAN challenge individuals' ideas and make them think about things that they hadn't considered before. For me, that's a lot more fun/interesting than expecting the worst from people all the time and hiding behind a snide indifference. Thanks, I'd rather challenge myself to do something positive. But I'm sure your way works for you as well; it certainly works for lots of other people.

I'm not saying I condone telling people to reformat their computers, I just don't have any sympathy for the poor fool gullible enough to do it. If you go on the internet, you have to expect the worst from people. That way you're prepared for people trying to mess with you just for kicks.

High school. Years 9, 10 and 11. So that's ages... 16-13. I really don't know why they bother, no-one listens to anything they say. Ever.

It may not seem like it to you, but there are lots of people on the internet who are either young children, know little to nothing about computers, or are fairly new to the whole online experience and simply don't know what to expect yet. Is this their fault? Of course not. Coming from real life experience, most people would assume this: when you ask someone for help and they respond, they're actually going to help you, not lie and fuck with you for kicks.
