We used Maptools and what not to play online. It was pretty fun actually. Would be kinda neat to get an Escapist group going.
I've actually been thinking this same thing. Unfortunetaly, I'm kinda busy with 8+ hours of work a day and already DMing a game on the Escapist.

However, you are most definetaly not alone in thinking that an Escapist D&D might be a good idea.

My husband and I are involved in two campaigns currently, one he runs and one our friend does. It's quite fun. We use 3.5 rules and just go with it.

I honestly couldn't stand D&D in high school, but my husband nagged me into playing it when we moved in together. The sacrifices a girl has to make for love -.-. Lol.

Maybe we can hit you up as a resource every now and then if you don't mind?

I've been playing D&D for about 20 years now. My wife has for like 10 years (her older brother got her in to it). I've played in varying degrees of frequency and game length over the years. Currently it's about once or twice a month for shorter sessions. Life's getting complicated as many of the people I play with have started having kids. I like playing all kinds of characters too. I tend to prefer 'skilled' types though. I also like to give them names that rhyme. Like Melven Larrick the Elven Cleric or Horven Bumlo inventor of Dwarven Gumbo.

Usually the cleric needs to be taken down a peg one way or another. I had a friend who once played a cleric named Bandaid, though that was just his name in common, in his native Dwarven his name was 'medikaladhesivstrip'.

edit: I've played every version of D&D at least one campaign and as far as the argument between 3.5 and 4th. Honestly, I just see them as two different games. I like them both for different reasons. Currently we're doing 4th ed (and some savage worlds: weird west) because it's slightly more 'casual' style works with all our grownup lives where we have kids and jobs and mortgages to worry about.

Lol 60%?

since this is a game site ill have to say, i hardly ever have time to play d&d tabletop lately so i have been spending a lot of time in Dungeons and Dragons Online, which is based on 3e and has an awesome active combat system, dungeons, traps and even DM narrators (with contributions from Gygax and Arneson).

Might be a good idea to check it out since its mostly free nowadays with plenty of options. The best part for me these days is that i can just pick a quest or a raid, play for 30mins to an hour and go back to work or school or whatever.

people may call me a fanboy but i don't care, im just putting out some facts.

Not at all. And if you do create a game and don't mind me really joining in on afternoons/evenings (GMT time) and on weekends, I'd possibly like to play as well. A few times during my working day might also be ok, as long as my work gets done :) But I really don't want to spoil it for anyone else, so I'm considering that a big if and entirely dependant on the GMs and the players decision.

But if you need/want any help even without me participating in the actual game, I'd be more than happy to help. I got most of my 3.5 books scanned on computer, a passing knowledge of 4th ed and AD&D, and over a decade of GMing experience. So if it does pan out, consider me on the call :)

A year or so ago. It was awesome! I played with friends as a DM, and with family as a normal character. Reccommend it to anyone with a few hours to spare. To get some figures and start off, I'd reccommend Adventuresgate.com. Was still up last time I looked. (To start, I'd go with 3.5 or whatnot. To get the feel of D&D at the start)

Do you know where I can get legit PDF's of the rule books? I have several of the physical 3.0 and 4th but not really any 3.5.

No, Dark Heresy/Rouge Trader are more my cup of tea.
I just bought the Rogue Trader book and have been reading it over. The game seems mind-exploding amazing (in fact i only bought it for the fact that crit explosions can take off id5 finger). Is it as awesome as the book makes it seem? I've have other experiences where actually PLAYING the game is rather lame.

I play 4th Ed. with a few friends whenever we LAN party, unfortunately, they're all friends of a friend that go to a different school, so I hardly ever see them, so I've played a grand total of twice.

I always end up playing the Ranger with no concept of aggro...

Absolutely. I play every Friday and Sunday with some friends of mine. We play a bastardized version of V1, as that's still the best base.

Yep, started around 2nd edition. 3.5 is still my favorite, but I'd like to at least try 4th before I make a decision on its merits. I should be playing over the summer, so can't wait for that.

I love PnP games, but i never got to play DnD . I got some books, but there were so many so much better games. (The Dark Eye, Shadowrun, Vampire) I've got two biweekly Dark Eye Groups and a group for shadowrun which meets scarcely plus once a month vampire. No time for any other games there.

I have played D&D 3.5 and Vampire the Masquerade, but most recently my group and I have picked up the fairly new, Dragon Age:Dark Fantasy. Since we game a bit more casually, DADF is convenient and fun because it is a lot easier for everyone to understand the rules. If you are trying to convince some friends to pick up a table top gaming habit (which you should be), then it is a simple to understand and play but still an interesting system. It is nowhere near as intimidating to a new gamer as the D&D mechanics so it might not scare them off.

Here is a link to an Escapist article that talks about it a bit and is actually how I found out about it.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/checkfortraps/7352-Check-for-Traps-1-Starter-Set

That being said, 3.5 is an amazing rule system that better applies to more serious gamers. Also, the dice used in DADF are only 3 d6, which makes the game a lot simpler, but I really miss my d20 and his polyhedral friends...

Used to play it... But not anymore, got somewhat bored of it... And the fourth edition fel like an insult to my intelligence.... played from 2nd to 3.5... the later was my favorite, more personalisation options to the characters)

I now play more of ShadowRun, Star Wars, Kult, Old World of Darkness and Call of Cthulhu...

So i guess the aswer is no

I'd like to give it a go. Never ventured in to table top gaming of any sort though
