the Mayan calendar ended in 2112 not 2012!
also natural disasters happen all the time!
2112 eh? *looks at Rush album 2112* hmm...
Anyways, shit happens on this planet all the time, Tornadoes tear though towns, hurricanes flood places, the sun sends off solar flares. Yeah, we have our backs against the wall if you look at what we are up against as far as surviving in the universe, but we pull it off because we are smart and tough sons of bitches.

Make no mistake, the Mayans were stupid as hell.
So stupid they measured the solar year more accurately than Greek astronomers.
And much, much less accurately than modern day astronomers. There's nothing to fear. There isn't even an asteroid entering our solar system for the next 5000 years.

Most definitely but without telescopes or satellites they were able to get it down to a 365 day cycle which is damn impressive.

All I know is, the days leading up to december 21, 2012 will give me the chance to pick up hot chicks with a line I may not get to use often in my life....

"the world's about to end, lets go have sex."

Sure, some women may laugh/slap me, but its gotta work on a few. and if the world does happen to end, at least i get to thoroughly enjoy the last few days

That is all. This man is a physicist that knows much more on this theory than most other people.

Earthquakes and even star explosions happen all the time, don't worry about it.

Agreed, but there's a huge leap of logic from "Wow, that's quite an impressive feat of astronomy for a relatively backwards civilization" to "Wow, that's quite an impressive feat of astronomy THEREFORE THEY CAN PREDICT THE FUTURE!"

Seriously doubt it. Bad shit has happened all over the world since about 4.5 billion years ago. Unfortunately, as sad and tragic as it is, that's life and we all just have to deal with it.

If you know anything about Jehova's Witnesses, they say that the end of days is coming any moment now (have been saying that for close to 50 years now) and they cite that in the last 100 years or so, a lot more shit is going down is the big reveal. In counter to that, it just seems that way because we now hear about it more with modern technology. Over 200 years ago if the Japan disaster happened, do you think that we in west would know about it? I don't.
In counter to your argument the Jehovah's Witnesses point out this stuff using the bible and what jesus said when the end of days will come in revelation and also apparently the bible predicted the rise and fall of all the world powers back in the days of Nebuchadnezzar. I used to study with them and half my family are baptized with them. They never said any shit about 2012, but they think that it's all gonna end sometime in the next 100 or so years after 1914. They actually try to back up most of their shit with science as opposed to a lot of twits who pull it straight out of their ass. (see their mags called the Awake) I don't believe all of what they say, but even i have to admit with their backup data that they do make some good points if you are into the Christianity thing.
Completely agree, and I actually think that you back up some of what I say. I have also read the UK equivalent called Watchtower out of a sense of curiosity and I see where they are going with the arguments. They do try to base as much as possible on readings, teachings and fact to combat today's modern stigmas to religion. It is a valiant attempt, but when it comes down to it, I used to debate with JWs and I always found gaps in the logic. You're right though, it is an interesting subject worthy of more study.
