So Tosh then starts making some very generalizing, declarative statements about rape jokes always being funny, how can a rape joke not be funny, rape is hilarious, etc. I don?t know why he was so repetitive about it but I felt provoked because I, for one, DON?T find them funny and never have. So I didnt appreciate Daniel Tosh (or anyone!) telling me I should find them funny. So I yelled out, ?Actually, rape jokes are never funny!?
I did it because, even though being ?disruptive? is against my nature, I felt that sitting there and saying nothing, or leaving quietly, would have been against my values as a person and as a woman. I don?t sit there while someone tells me how I should feel about something as profound and damaging as rape.
After I called out to him, Tosh paused for a moment. Then, he says, ?Wouldn?t it be funny if that girl got raped by like, 5 guys right now? Like right now? What if a bunch of guys just raped her??

Well, I'm never watching Tosh.0 again...
Then again, I never did...

Really slimy move. Actually, this kind of reminds me of the Kramer incident...

While, judging by the articles, this was a bad joke in poor taste (both the original joke and the one directed at the woman), I'm not convinced that rape jokes can never be acceptable. Jokes about terrorism, genocide, and all sorts of other unpleasant things are accepted, as long as they aren't just, "LOL, isn't terrorism/genocide/whatever hilarious," which seems to be what Tosh did. So yeah, jokes about anything are ok as long as they are funny and not in poor taste.

There must have been a better way to handle that. Like a "don't like it? Leave" and move on with the show. I guess given the right circumstances rape jokes can be funny, maybe, but when told like that it's just not a good idea. At all.

I've never liked Daniel Tosh. I've always found him to be an unfunny chap.

Never watched his show, probably never will. I think this is a fine example of his character. Making jokes to strangers about how they should be raped seems right up his alley.

Maybe Comedy Central will can him and get someone funny to host a show about internet videos.

Well Daniel Tosh's main category of comedy is dark humor. Sometimes it delves into incredibly dark areas. Being offended at what he does is like being offended at Lisa Lampanelli for calling anyone that looks even slightly effeminate a ******.

Its just what they do.

I get that rape and gender politics have become a hot topic for the general community lately, but it's not unacceptable to crack a bit of dark humor, even if it might be in poor taste.

Nothing, NOTHING, is out of bounds when it comes to actual funny comedy.

When it is done right it can be hilarious but when it's done by a dick it isn't amusing in the slightest.

So I couldn't answer your poll because i've heard rape jokes that made me laugh (one that I wasn't expecting caused me to spray coffee on my monitor) as such I find anything to be acceptable when it comes to comedy as long (and this can't be emphasised enough) as long as IT IS DONE RIGHT.

Frankie Boyle is one of my favourite comedians and there isn't any subject he hasn't touched on.

As for the OP, he made a pretty bad taste joke but it was hardly a threat of gang rape. Gotta love that sensationalism.

I'm hardly surprised this dude would retort a criticism about poor taste with something in poor taste. I've listened to the guy's comedy before, I'm not a big fan, but I listened to enough to know that he's pretty dark.I don't think any subject matter is really untouchable in comedy, it's all about execution.

I think Daniel Tosh is funny. Sure, sometimes he gets a little dark, but that's part of his routine.

Oh, and thanks for starting another thread on the Escapist about rape. We sure don't have enough of those around here.

EDIT: Another thing: Tosh "threatened" that heckler? He clearly said "wouldn't it be funny if that woman got gang raped." That isn't threatening, that's a hypothetical preposition done in his own style.

No, threatening would be "I am going to rape you, you fucking *****."
