Mandatory Carlin swoops the thread

Also your poll is bad and you should feel bad.

Edit: "Definitively"? Really? Not only are there shit choices but the only word that isn't "no" is spelt wrong.

If we're going to be using George Carlin jokes... then I think you mean "Air Marshal Carlin swoops the thread". Ho-ho.

Fully agreed with the point he makes, too.

I didn't read the artical and I'm not going to defend or oppose mister Tosh's joke, because I don't know the context, but I'll say one thing.

Either everything is okay to make fun of, or nothing is.

Time and place is a factor. Dead baby jokes like Cyanide and Happyness' make me grin, but I won't show one to a person that just had her child taken away.

Rape jokes can be fun, just like everything else, but mind your audience.
BUT!
But, A comedian can't know his audience.
He can't know if there is a cancer patient, a 9/11 victim or a rape victim.
So if someone does get offended by a comedian who is known to joke about touchy subjects, you should have done your research.

Tosh's routines are about dark comedy. That means going into dark subjects. This is well known. Since the woman there was offended, that either means she didn't do her homework, or that she took a risk that Tosh would talk about a subject she didn't like.

Now, what's the proper response to being at a comedy show you don't like? You shut up and leave. This woman is a heckler, plain and simple. And Tosh was rightly annoyed at being heckled in the middle of his show.

It was a bad joke and it was in poor taste, but Tosh did not "threaten" to rape the woman, and the woman had no right to heckle the comic she voluntarily went to see. Actual rape never entered the situation in any way or form, so what's the big deal?

In short: sensationalist thread is sensationalist, and the people who are calling for Tosh's head on a pike (that's you, OP!) need to calm the fuck down.

EDIT: Also, that poll is stupid.

As someone who can find humour in pretty much any subject matter, I'm going to say that rape jokes can be funny and acceptable sometimes. In this case it wasn't. Daniel Tosh was confusing stand-up comedy with stand-up rape advocacy.

>is rape acceptable to joke about?
>three wrong answers in a row

Goodness me. It looks like I'm in the minority as someone who enjoys Tosh's humor regardless of content.
EDIT: I'm also an idiot who didn't check the thread. Have this as my apology.

The poll is a troll.
Anyway, if you tell someone that it would be funny if they were raped; YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON.
Do you even know what the word RAPE means or what it's like? Have you seen it's after effects? Have you had to "be there" for someone, trying to be the best help that you can while the whole family just HOPES that the police can catch the guy? The sheer horror of it. We can't take things like this lightly, and by using RAPE as a put down or a way of "keeping a heckler in their place", it abuses the word.
Yeah, I got a stick up my ass about rape.
Deal with it.

"Is rape acceptable to joke about?"

Yes, it is. Everything is fair game. It is the listener that is left to laugh or not. I laugh at dead baby jokes. And various other not politically correct ones, such as painting stereotypes. Also, murder and other black humour.

"Daniel Tosh threatens Woman with Gang Rape"

Where was the threat?

Man you must hate holocaust, 9/11, murder and jokes concerning bigotry huh? It's dark comedy, not everybody likes it but it's ultimately fine, mostly because it's hyperbolic and removed from reality.

I don't give a shit if you've "got a stick up your ass about rape." What I do care about is when you insist that everyone else shove one up there, too.

And you're not going to convince anyone by saying that rape is bad. It is, and everyone knows that. But the fact is, there was no actual rape involved here, nor was there advocacy of rape, so get off your high horse. Just because the word "rape" sets off alarms in your head but not in others' doesn't mean that Tosh or anyone who finds this funny is a "TERRIBLE PERSON."

Oh shut up. Is rape bad, yes, is it a major problem, yes, should a comedian be able to make jokes about it, yes, did Tosh go a little overboard. yes. The fact is that she and her friends could have just left the theater, everyone knows you don't yell out something during a comedy show, because then you're are considered a heckler, and you become fair game, its one of the unwritten rules in comedy.

OP really needs to watch this.

Everything is fine to joke about, it's a joke, not to be confused with the serious business of actual rape.

Should have had a yes option in the poll, bit late now.

Nice biased poll there. I'm sure it will give you the results you were looking for.

I think Daniel Tosh is funny. Sure, sometimes he gets a little dark, but that's part of his routine.

Oh, and thanks for starting another thread on the Escapist about rape. We sure don't have enough of those around here.
Maybe you think we get too many of those because the topic of rape makes you uncomfortable. It should. Don't run away from it, but face it head on and understand the reality of it. Rape is NEVER funny. Ask anyone who's ever been a victim. Ask any cop that's had to give out a rape kit, or help someone through a line up. Serious business.

Where's a "yes" poll option? I thought it was funny and I will continue to watch Tosh.0 and any future comedy specials involving Daniel Tosh.
Just as I'll continue to post, retweet, and tweet this story to everyone I can until Tosh either apologizes or suffers monetary losses as the result of people no longer wishing to support him by consuming his product.
That's hilarious, but i think it would be better for you to have a more constructive purpose to your life. Eh, then again what would the internet be without its swarms of white knights? (Probably far better off.)
Yeah, I'm the asshole that think gang rape threats aren't totally funny. I must be with the PC police, yea? I'm just ruining everybody's fun by being a wet blanket.
Did you even read the goddamn "R Word" article posted on this very site not but a few weeks ago?
Ask anyone who saw a corpse or murder.

The crying mothers over their now-dead kid. A murder because a mistake in identity by gang members.

The families torn apart by death, lives that will never be the same. Families that sometimes starve by a source of income they provided now being gone.

Serious business. Yet we are not angry about jokes about death and murder that are widely accepted.

Ask anyone who has been harassed throughout life for being a minority or gay.

The unrepairable psychological harm done by the stigma. The discrimination they face every day.

Discrimination that ends in tragedy as many gay kids kill themselves. Or minorities forced into crime because of racial bias by employers.

Serious business, except we still have gay and minority jokes.

Need I continue?
Fucking this. Rape is awful, and actual rapes will NEVER be funny, but for god's sake, you know what's worse than rape? MURDER. That's pretty much as bad as it gets, really. Yet jokes about murders are often funny, and Daniel Tosh excels at dark humor. Even if you aren't familiar with his style of comedy, if you don't like it... leave! Just go! Don't heckle like a stupid *****, because if there's one thing that never helps, it's heckling.

Plus, how was it a "threat?" Moreover, how do you even make a gang rape threat? "Man, I'm gonna find like, 5 other dudes and we're gonna totally rape you." Sounds... threatening?

Rape jokes make me uncomfortable and I generally don't find them funny, I admit. But you know what I do? I ignore it. I don't laugh. And if nobody laughs at a joke, nobody will want to tell it. But this "holier-than-thou" bullshit doesn't help, it just makes people groan and ignore YOU. Get over it.

In fact, Tosh.0 has had multiple clips of people actually dying and Tosh made quite a few funny jokes about them.

Also, poll is perfect :D

What Tosh said was a dick move, but concerning the topic of rape in humor...

SadakoMoose said:

Yeah, and making people shut up about it in humor is totally not running away from it.

Rape is NEVER funny. Ask anyone who's ever been a victim. Ask any cop that's had to give out a rape kit, or help someone through a line up.
You first, Professor X. And unless you come up with a 100% consensus, I'll discard your argument.
