Also, comedy is tragedy+time. The darker the comedy, the closer to the time one gets and the more serious the tragedy may be. This includes things such as rape, murder, terrorism, suicide, pedophilia and natural disasters. Rape itself isn't funny. Murder isn't funny. Suicide isn't funny. But jokes about these subjects can be hilarious.

Also, I'd prefer to be raped than to step on a stonefish or to be eaten alive by army ants. All of these are horrible ordeals but the latter two apparently hurt something fierce.

I guess what I'm saying here is: don't rape. It's bad, and rapers should feel bad.

Is anyone SERIOUSLY doubting that RAPE is BAD?
Is anyone so naive as to still believe that RAPE is OK?

His joke wasn't funny and highly inappropriate but people need to put away the torches and pitchforks. There are a lot of comics that as Steve Harvey puts it, don't realize they go too far until they do. If you look at his other material it's funny because it's all highly inappropriate. Feel free to not support him or any other comic you find unfunny.

This poll is one sided and stupid. A joke is a joke. For someone to say one is ok and another is not is quite frankly retarded. You show me a person who hasn't laughed at a holocaust, black, asian, mentally handicap, dead person, and/or sexual joke and I'll show you a lair. What I find appalling is that rape jokes are sooooo evil but jokes of child molesting catholic priests are ok. WHY? Is it because most of the victims are male? It's pathetic for people to take a stand on something because their sexist or racist (sexist in this case and just needed to point it out so no retard/troll can twist my words).

ANYTHING can be funny. But you have to word the jokes a certain way. Daniel Tosh messed up a bit on that part, but getting mad at him for joking about rape is like getting mad at Trey Parker and Matt Stone for, well, anything they put into South Park. For Christ's sake, they make fun of Jews and poor people all the time. And I'm pretty sure they've made fun of rape a few times.

(And if you want a less biased view of what people think, you should change the poll. The options "Yes," "No," and "Depends" would probably work perfectly. Unless you're so stubborn you only want to see the opinions of people who agree with you.)

Ragging on Daniel Tosh for this joke is like calling Doug Stanhope a homophobe for using the word ****** as freely as he does. People need to stop taking COMEDIANS so seriously, and learn to look at the context of how they say things into account. Seriously, if your going to hate on Daniel Tosh (who is known as a a very offensively harsh comedian) then your going to have to hate Richard Pryor for his comedy and pretty much any comedian that has had an HBO special.

How much you want to bet this petty crusade won't do a thing to Tosh's career? People act like he was a nobody before Comedy Central. He wasn't, he had a strong following for his stand up and now he gets paid a crap load for Tosh.0 with a new generation of fans.

This whole fiasco will do nothing but make more publicity and money for him in the long run. Comedy Central won't fire a comedian for making rape jokes while they still have their other comedians making black jokes and homosexual jokes. Oh and as well as murder, genocide, torture and other horrendous topics that are hilarious if told right.

edit: well I guess it will do a thing for his career, get him more fans.

Hey, OP, I'm not sure if you know this, but you missed some options in your poll, namely the "yes" option.

Tosh is a comedic douche. That's what he does. I see no problem here (and I don't even like Tosh as a comedian).

I think that once you interrupt a live comedy performance, you automatically give up the right to be offended by how the comic responds. Yeah, rape is bad, that's the joke. It's fine if you don't like dark humor, but you shouldn't expect a comic to apologize in the middle of a comedy show.

And you know what else? Tosh doesn't give a fuck that she got offended. He apologized because he to, for pr's sake. Had this never been in the news, he would have never thought back to some heckler that got shut down for interrupting. She may think she is some advocate for women's rights, but to the comedian, just another heckler.

I hope she gets raped by like 5 guys.

You know, I read the article and thought: "Wow, this is awful, holy crap." Then I read some of the posts on here (definitely not all, some weren't terribly convincing and some were on the many pages I didn't read--sorry guys, 22 is a lot of pages) and thought: "No, the idea of rape jokes aren't bad, Tosh just can't execute them at all" (to me anyway). So, perhaps if the poll was changed to "Is rape acceptable for Tosh to joke about?" I'd probably be able to give an accurate answer.

Also, as an off-topic aside, why is it that whenever someone brings up a subject they are bothered by, does everyone respond with "Well, if you're attacking X, why aren't you attacking A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, Y, and Z as well? You know, to have valid opinions, you need to be attacking every issue that can be construed as bad if you want to attack one"? I mean, yeah, the rest of everything bad that's ever happened ever is, well, bad, but doesn't it make more sense to fight one battle at a time? And keeping a personal history of every argument in favor of everything ever (or against everything ever) in every format would be difficult, especially if some of those arguments were made verbally (I know I'm not financially stable enough to have a video camera in every room I intend on visiting for the rest of my life--with high quality audio equipment and digital storage options). And, honestly, unless I missed it somewhere: We're discussing a comedian when there are still STARVING CHILDREN IN AFRICA!? WHO HAVE AIDS!? HOW DARE US!!! Really, unless anyone who argues a point is supposed to tackle every issue in history (note: quite a few) related to comedy or otherwise, this is really just avoiding the issue. And if you'd like to debate THAT point, I'll need to see links to your Opinionated Person's Back Catalog of Arguments of the Same Subject as This One Database.

It's Daniel Tosh. He does this kind of thing all the time.

I think he's hilarious. Personally, I hope he doesn't apologize either. I'm tired of people giving weak apologizes because the media looks down on them.

I didn't say that as a gripe against Tosh. I meant that usually when things like this make this much of a public backlash, the company in question would rather make good with the public than hold onto something that caused them problems in the first place.

I'm sorry, I think I've missed something here.
Basically, what he did was harass one particular woman, which is horrible, but NOTHING is out of bounds to joke about. So long as it doesn't directly target someone or incite violence or anything, If someone gets offended, it's a problem they'll have to deal with, not the comedian.

It's not a fallacy. In fact, the argument about letters is a straw man, trying to show that this subject is false analogy. The comparison is valid in this situation. If you are saying that it's unacceptable to joke about rape, than you need to explain why rape is worse than other subjects(including genocide, the holocaust, and dead babies, tough sell).

The reason the argument mentioned isn't false analogy because it's comparing jokes about one subject to jokes about another subject, he's still comparing jokes to each other, which is appropriate. To make the argument, you need to find some reason that rape is so much worse than these other things, you can't just say that you can't compare them without offering a reason. Personally, I can't see any such reason.
