This thread reminds me of another one, except that one was about dead baby jokes, instead of rape jokes.
Oh... GOD! *laughing and almost crying in disbelief* Oh... my... God... *repeat*

That's just so horrible. Just... *loss for words*

Have you ever heard of anti humour? Or dark humour or fun at someone else's expense. That's all that is going on here.
Of course I have. I've seen it done well and I've seen it attempted to little avail. However "Wouldn't it be funny if she got raped" isn't anti-humour. It isn't black humour. It's just an incompetent comedian being rude and if anyone considers it "fun" I hope they are duly ashamed.

4 out of 5 people enjoy gang rape.
This post proves rape can make a great punchline. Seriously guys, "humor isn't really about being nice".

Now, Bioware isn't the most philosophically sound writers out there but they've made some good points before. Take it from here Joker:
I'm not condoning what Tosh did, I didn't see it and I wasn't there... though, I would think most people going to see him would be more familiar with his style of humor. He insults people. It's like going into the front-lines of a war and being surprised someone is shooting at you.

I keep seeing this argument crop up, and it kind of worries me. How is this 'fun at someone else's expense'?

I mean, I could say, for instance, that I think it would be hilarious if your mother, or your sister, or your girlfriend got raped repeatedly by a gang of thugs, but what fun has been had? Did I enjoy myself? Did you? Did those people who witnessed it? Whence cometh the fun? What form does it take?

I see the appeal to 'dark humor' repeated over and over again, like it meant something - but it doesn't mean anything, because it's not an explanation of anything.

So, please, somebody explain this to me. How is this funny? How is this anything more than misogynistic and creepy and disgusting and sad?

Cause I honestly don't see it.
It's mostly context, it works best when the comedian is extremely deadpan and blase about it. The humour comes from the astonishment and flustered reaction of the heckler in contrast to the lack of reaction from the speaker. It isn't about what's said but the reaction and how it shuts down and humiliates disruptive attendants. Tosh is dark and so his heckling is also dark in order to mesh with his act and keep up the flow that the audience member is robbing him of.

Tosh is a really shitty comedian though so he can't really pull it off.

Well, Tosh was always pretty unfunny, but I'm a little surprised at unfunny and misogynist. Kramer meltdown, anyone?

Also, poll is perfect :D
Ahahah. No one can have opinions, eh?

Poll's bullshit, lost a bit of respect for Tosh, will continue to laugh hysterically at things like the 4chan image about "changing into the spiderman costume..." =

We should start arresting people who say bad things in a stand up act! We need to protect the rights of the people who are having their feelings hurt.

Any politically incorrect comedy act is just COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE in today's society! this is the 21st century! Any comedian who tries to get cheap laughs with offensive speech is complete scum and should be locked up for life, regardless of whether the remark was intended to be ironic! Joking about rape is JUST AS BAD as committing rape; I'm sure that Daniel Tosh was genuine when he said that woman should be raped, I bet that he planned to do it later himself! DISGUSTING!

everyone keeps saying this is dark humor...but I dunno. This is what happened

-Rape Joke made by Daniel Tosh
-Woman takes offense and calls out. (Perhaps she has been sexually assaulted or knows someone who has been)
-Daniel Tosh makes another rape joke this time focusing on the offended woman being raped.

He has a right to say such thing, but if people in society feel it should be condemned. So be it.

My issue is that it wasn't a joke. There was no context, exaggeration, or point to it. The overall take home theme ended up being people getting raped is funny. End of story.

To say she should not have been upset, is...fucking stupid. Yes it was a comedy club, and yes some comedians take pot shots at the crowd. However there's a line between making a crack and implicating someone should be raped because he would find it funny. That is the implication of his words. That doesn't really fall under dark humor, as I see it. It was just 1)insensitive, which most people are escapist couldn't give two shits about, 2) not funny or in a joke format, nothing exaggerated or contextualized just this woman it would be funny if five guys showed up pulled her out of her seat ripped off her clothes and abused her sexually. No lead to anything...just a rather cruel thing to say, though he has the right to say it.

He has the right to say it, I don't think he should, but he has a right to. That said I wouldn't blame them if someone took a pipe to his head or something. Though I would say, I would like to seem him make a joke about that.

I think the better question is...why did people laugh? What was funny? Was it people thinking it was outrageous? Was it people thinking it was a way at getting back at her for her trying to censor him by stating her viewpoint? Do people honestly think rape, the act itself, is funny? Why did people laugh?

This, I think, is where I get hung up.

Do we think it's okay to shut down and humiliate a woman by telling her we would be amused to see her gang-raped? Is that where we are as a society?
It's 100% okay. If you don't want it to be okay, you don't want free speech. You don't get to pick and choose what is and isn't okay--that defeats the entire purpose of freedom.

Well that's the point of acknowledging a heckler. They massively disrupt an act and can totally ruin a performance. The fact it was a joke about a woman getting raped is a combination of Tosh's condescending and hateful humour and the fact that it guarantees the biggest outburst. But the important thing to remember is that it's an act, it doesn't mean Tosh actually wants her to be raped, just that if you fuck with his act he's going to humiliate you by incorporating you.

I will say however that this instance of it sucked because Tosh failed to play off anything she said. No rebuttal or set up just it would be funny if you were raped. Of course I think it was fair in principle because not allowing something because you were offended is a slippery slope.

'Free speech' is a legal issue - the right of the people not to be silenced by the government. I'm talking about the moral and/or ethical climate that shrugs its shoulders and accepts vitriolic bullshit from morons instead of acting against it.

It's not 100% okay. It's not even .001% okay. Just because he has the right to speak without government sanction does not make it justifiable or acceptable or anything other than utterly reprehensible.
"I don't like your words. The public should rise up against you and you should stop."

Hi, military dictator. I'm freedom. Have fun picking and choosing what is and isn't okay based off what you personally find moral. I'll be over there, in the free world ignoring things I don't like and letting others choose how to talk.

What are you even talking about?
You are trying to argue that it's not okay for someone to make jokes you dislike because, in your opinion, they are amoral. I compared you to a military dictatorship.

Keep up.
