So, I've just started playing Dark Souls, and I've gotten as far as ringing the first bell (the one guarded by two Gargoyles) without much difficulty, though "without much difficulty" in Dark Souls really just means I haven't yet broken anything expensive. And moving forward I want to know whether I should bother investing in magic at all.
Some info on my character: My starting class was a warrior, with the tiny beings ring as the gift, and I've invested primarily in Strength, but I've also kept my dexterity up, as well as upgraded my health and endurance occasionally. I wear big heavy armor and mostly use weapons like spears and greatswords, just to make sure I'm not out of practice by the time the Drake Sword becomes outclassed.
As far as I can tell, healing magic seems redundant, given that I very rarely run out of Estus Flasks by the time I get to a Bonfire, and I think that upgrading dexterity will let me use bows pretty well, so if I need magic at all, what I assume is that I should use whatever has the most buffs available.
Your advice, escapists?
