So I went out today and decided I'm going to get Dark Souls and actually play it. I've installed all the fixes and I'm ready to go. There is just one problem, I don't have an xbox controller. I've got a GameCube controller and a PS2 controller both I can hook up to my PC and use for games.

So what controller should I use for this game? Mouse and Keyboard, GameCube Controller, or PS2 Controller?

PS2 controller. GameCube controller will not work period, and vanilla KB+M has a weird camera on the mouse. The keyboard camera control is fine (kid you not), but the mouse camera control likes being drunk.

OP, do you have a PS3 controller? That may also be something to consider.

No the PS2/gamecube was the last console I owned, and I mostly played PS1 games with it. Why wouldn't the GameCube controller work though?

Control scheme. The GameCube controller has 2 less buttons needed for Dark Souls, one being the gestures menu, and the other being the left handed weak attack.

How did you get a GameCube controller working? :-D

PS2, although you'd need an adaptor, if I'm not mistaken. And you might need third party software, too. I myself use x360 ce [https://code.google.com/p/x360ce/] along with just a generic controller (makes it be recognised as an Xbox one, so it's easier to use) but I'm not sure how it'd go with a PS2 controller.

I've got a USB adapter that basically just tells my PC 'hey these are just game pads' and does the needed usb to adapter signal conversion. They are fully functional though sometimes the control scheme is weird on newer games and I have to edit it.

The adapter only cost me 10 bucks and it lets me and my friend play emulated ps2 and gamecube 2 player games with their native controllers on the PC.

Worse come to worse you can get keyboard and mouse to work rather smoothly, just takes some messing with. If you have the most updated DSfix and DSMfix than all that is left is to change the key bindings.

Just follow this guys key bindings, make sure to increase mouse sensitivity in game.

I finished the game with K+M so i would also suggest to go with a keyboard and mouse. If you tailor it correctly you can get by,although it might get little clunky from time to time and im not sure its from the game or my mouse. Also this mod also helps for those completely ignorant of the keys http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/41 it helped me get some things done the first time through

Ideally I recommend you go out and buy a wired Xbox 360 controller which is what I use, but since you already have a PS2 controller I'm sure that would work just fine if you don't want to spend any money.

I would strongly recommend not using mouse and keyboard because the game really just doesn't work very well with it, but its still a matter of preference, if you can enjoy the mouse and keyboard controls then by all means use a mouse and keyboard.

If you can successfully use the PS2 controller, go with that. I'm playing through it now with a PS3 controller and it works just fine.

Of all those choices, the PS2 controller would probably be the best one.

I personally just use a logitech dual action which is basically uses a playstation controller format.
Or you can do like this guy does. Pretty good controllers, those are.

Keyboard and Mouse for me.

I never really use a controller so I'm crap at them. The DSFix and DSMFix mods make the controls for K+M perfectly workable and if you're more used to those controls it's probably your best option.

If you're used to a controller however you can just skip that stuff and play straight away (assuming you have a controller that's plug and play of course).

I played the whole game with a mouse and keyboard and while the controls in the game aren't great. They are just as bad with a controller in my opinion. I did both and decided to stick with mouse/keyboard with mods.

You can mod M&K to make it not awful but Dark Souls will always be a controller game for me. Install DS3 Tool and emulate a 360 controller to make it work.

It doesn't matter.
Just use whichever you can get used to the easiest.
It's not about what you use to control your character, it's about forgetting you're using an input device in the first place.

If you get the control mods as well then K&M are actually functional, but still the entire control scheme was made for Xbox controller so you won't exactly get the best experience without a controller.

Well, ps3 controller. The scheme is essentially identical to that of demon's souls, and that was a ps3 exclusive. But I'm just being ridiculously pedantic.

But yeah, ps3 or xbox are far and away the best. Every button has a purpose, and every purpose has its button.

Why not just buy a used controller from Gamestop for $20?
