I'm going to play devils advocate here and say go with soulstorm.

I don't quite get all the flak it receives from fans, having played both Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. The only complaint I have with SS would be the Sisters of Battle infinite resources exploit/bug/feature.

I can only assume you are NOT buying this game for it's multiplayer because... well, last I checked multiplayer was a ghost town in the DOW 1 games.

Soulstorm: you get all the races (Except tyranid, but there's a mod for that) more units (The flying units are a bit wonky, but entirely optional. Don't get the hatin' on those either)more maps, and new tech/units.

Dark Crusade: Better campaign. Less of everything else.

Make your choice.

I haven't even played Dark Crusade, but I'm still confident about saying it's superior to Soulstorm, because Soulstorm was horrendous.

Its a lot of fun to march through dark crusade as the necrons.

I NEVER played DOW for the multiplayer, so cannot speak to that. The campaigns were pleasant warhammer experiences, though fell to repetition rather quickly.

And (and) to mention briefly DOW2, "what the hell were they thinking?" sums it up nicely.
They were thinking "well, starcraft 2 is actually going to finally come out. Perhaps we should focus on what we do best and let starcraft focus on what it does best."

I've only played Dark Crusade, so I really can't say anything about Soul Storm. I was a bit disappointed that they switched from a story driven campaign to a more Risk style map, but Dark Crusade is seriously awesome, plus it came out first so I'd say buy it first.

Go to the European Steam site. Both DoW Platinum and DoW: Soulstorm work out to about $12 total after the Euro->$ conversion. Or you could wait for the DoW Franchise sale which I can almost guarantee is coming this week. If it's not, then I'll be disappointed b/c I'm waiting for DoW II to go on a better sale.

I'd go with Dark Crusade, even though soulstorm might have better mods, I doubt it, its generally agreed upon that Soulstorm was shit, and that most people stuck with Dark Crusade.
I might be wrong but that's how I think it is.
can you explain to me what makes SS bad..? I have all the dawn of war 1 games but I don't play them online that much, all I've seen is SS has more of everything... (also I should mention that I played normal Dawn of War and SS the most of the 4)

SoulStorm's campaign was horrible, the balanced was fucked more than previous DoW expansions, the new additions were (mostly) worthless.

I liked the Dark Eldar myself; yeah the campaign was bad but I say that about Dark Crusade as well, as for balance... yeah I don't look too deeply into that when you're playing an RTS game with more then 4 races (and one of them being Necron)

Dark Crusade. The best of the expansions. Soulstorm messed a few things up IMO.

If you don't have the first game and Winter Assault then get the platinum edition. It's the same price as the expansion packs, but contains the DoW I, Winter Assault, and Dark Crusade.

Go with Dark Crusade, I've played and completed both and I can't stress it enough that Soulstorm is horrible.

Soulstorm tries to be bigger than Dark Crusade by allegedly giving you a whole solar system to conquer but in essence it's the same length campaign as Dark Crusade (just with two extra, not very good, Stronghold missions) and all of the new additions were...disappointing (which is a shame because the Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle do have interesting lore and backstories in the tabletop game).

In short, go with Dark Crusade (even the base game on it's own is better, mods be damned).
Yea, the biggest problem with the solar system setting in Soulstorms SP campaign is that it bottlenecked a lot of the armies into the same territories. So every playthrough usually had the same armies in the same territories as opposed to Dark Crusade where I played through with every army and I think every one was different. I played Soulstorm?s SP Campaign twice and both times the same armies were in the same territories.
The Sisters rocked though: I wish they were added to Dark Crusade in place of the Necrons.
As mods go, I don?t think there were significantly more for Soulstorm. To be honest, Dark Crusade was the only one I modded and the community seemed pretty robust. Just at a quick glance, it seems like all of the coolest Soulstorm mods were just adapted from Dark Crusade (or earlier) mods.

Yeah, so the developers of DOW2 mustn't have actually played DOW1 because I thought DOW2 was really really bad. It's hardly comparable to the origins of its series so I don't really get what you're saying by "we should focus on what we do best"?

OT: Still dark crusade tbh, despite multiplayer serves being down, I think u can still play as all races in skirmish and defo can in campaign. But if you want multiplayer, u should possibly consider buying a few more DOW1 titles to unlock more armies to use!

In dawn of war 2 they where trying to go for a faster paced system more along the lines of WiC, CoH, or ground control. Basically trying to be different than other major RTS coming out around the same time.

This is purely a matter of opinion. DOW2 focused on small unit combat, and eliminated base building (which was already toned down in DOW1, compared to its rivals). DOW 2 is thus all about management of these small units and their tactical placement. There are zones of fire, the ability to emplace heavy weapons, destructable cover, and plenty of uber micro to keep all the multiplayer nerds happy. Regardless of how terrible you think it is, they do this very well. I'm not saying I loved DOW2, but this is specifically what the game is about. That you hate it, and favor the more traditional approach of DOW1 is a perfectly valid opinion, but the game is just fundamentally different. And DOW1 was basically starcraft 1.5 with more serious balance issues, so I was pleased to see innovations in the series.

DOW3 looks to be completely different from both earlier iterations. I look forward to it.

Dark crusade was a better game, soulstorm was a bit broken, especially some of the stronghold missions, some i could beat easily and some were just a nightmare everytime.
At least dark crusade was consistant, bar the odd time when literally hundreds of guardsmen swarmed me...

But yeah, get dark crusade, soulstorm isnt that bad, just kinda worse, like how i view resident evil 5 compared to 4, both are good games, but ones noticeably better cause the other just copies it and screws it up a little.
