Imo Eve gets the penalty of death right, you usually just lose your gear (or ship in eve) but retain your character which gives longevity and investment to the game. If you are unlucky enough to get your escape pod destroyed aswell you lose a portion of time for last skill you trained, which can be rather disastrous in itself if it's major skill that takes months to learn.
