Since this is a 1 vs. 1 battle with no external support, I'd go with a Imperial Guardsman, specifically a Catachan Jungle Fighter... namely Sly Marbo.

Guardsmen may be cannon fodder who's main strength is in numbers, but "Space Rambo" is a one man army who could probably kill an entire squad of the other troops without them even knowing he's there, so a 1 vs. 1 Deadliest Warrior type scenario would be a cakewalk.

Jamash has a point, it depends on the specific type of soldier from each category.

Gears, I think. Due to the massive CQB advantage of the lancer's chainsaw. Especially if it was delta, but otherwise I slightly doubt their experience. With humanity in the ropes, how many gears were as carmine, "green as grass"? So I guess if it weren't for delta, it'd be the odsts. Advanced armour, access to the best human weaponry, and the best of the unsc trained to their peak.

I'm pretty much torn 50/50 between Imperial Guardsmen and ODST guys.

Colonial Marines and Clone Troopers are out immediately because the whole point and purpose of their existence is to be fodder for more powerful opponents.

Helghast just make me think of faceless boring antlike humanoids, they're so unlikeable in every way i can't even judge how well they'd fare versus anything because I just can't think anything positive about them.

Gears(from what little I know) just seem to be roid raging hulks in some scrap metal plating firing aging rifles that were probably manufactured before most of them were even born. If they had armor that didn't look like it was recently a car, they might stand a chance.

So yeah. If I had to pick one, I'd go with Imperial Guard just because of the technological advantage, but really they seem pretty similar to me.

For me, I'd say NONE of the ones listed. Why? Space Marines of the WH40K setting pretty much beat out any suggestion of any other Sci Fi infantry, with the possible exception of the original Sci-Fi soldiers, the Mobile Infantry from Robert A. Hemline's Starship Troopers novel (y'know, the guys with Battlesuits and friggin' Atom Bombs wielded to them!)

Anyways, your average Space Marine is modified to an extent where he can shrug off just about any injury outside his armour, hibernate in the Vaccum of Space for extended periods, and even absorb your thoughts and memories by way of eating your brain. And this is WITHOUT the use of their Patterned Power Armour.

Speaking of, standard Power Armour is essentially motorised tank plates slapped over them. Considering they have the ability to shrug off most injuries beforehand, with the armour they can be pretty difficult to take down without the correct weaponary. And then let's not forget their standard weapon - the Boltgun - is essentially a Rapid Fire, Armour Piercing Grenade Launcher that fires fist sized explosives at you.

Yes, 40K has a habit of turning everything up to eleven. While Guard also have plenty of brass balls and up to Eleven weapons (Leman Russ Tank, Deathstrike Missile, Marbo etc), they are at the end of the day Redshirts unfortunately. But hey, I suppose it beats being one of the poor guys on PDF Duty.

I'm going to play devil's advocate and say the COG soldiers. Let's face it, these guys are huge, lumbering chunks of meat and metal that can stuff themselves behind damn near any obstacle to stay clear of fire and the sheer balls and bravado it takes to run into a guy's face and chainsaw him from groin to shoulder and you've got some pretty tough sons of bitches.

Guardsmen generally have inferior training and gear to the rest. Not terribly bad when stacked against the rest, but not great either.

The only advantage the Clone Troopers really have are numbers and support, so they're out. Commandos on the other hand could probably kill every single one of the others 50 times over in less than a minute, but not the regular Troops.

Colonial Marines are essentially modern day Marines but more...jarhead-y somehow. There doesn't seem to be anything particularly great about them, and I'm, sure as hell an individual one wouldn't be able to do a whole lot.

I'm not sure about ODST's. I haven't read the books but from what I've heard they're the standard quite silent ultra badass types, almost to the point where they're Mary Sues. In game, they're just regular dipshit marines with dark uniforms.

Gears have been fighting for ages and have armour which is probably superior to the rest. As well as this due to their strength and experience from a life of war and the fact they are probably the only ones aside from the Guardsmen who wouldn't completely suck at melee combat, I've chosen them.

Ideally the Helghast would curb stomp the shit out of anyone who'd fuck with 'em due to being hardcore space fascists who live on Hell. But they don't. They get completely owned and lose shitloads of guys in every one of the games, and they just never come across as having any degree of badassery, just suckery. They have some pretty sweet guns but that's about it.
