Inspired by a recent thread.

You might have hear of the incident where a man lost his pinky due to the violent theft of his newly bought iPad.

Let's say you just bought an iPad and someone tries to steal it from you at any cost but you also carry a gun.
Would you shoot the would-be thief ?

I wouldn't shoot, since I would never buy an iPad in the first place . . .

Someone on my property is what's known as "a convenient excuse." As in, a convenient excuse to do to the intruder what Kari Byron did to that tree out in the Mojave with a minigun.

(too bad I don't have a minigun, so I'd have to chop his legs off one shot at a time.)

That's retarded. It's an iPad; it's not worth anyone's life. Particularly when I could just as well point it at him and like-as-not have him back off.

1) Pull out gun and warn the thief
2) Load round into the chamber, warn them again
3) Disengage safety and give final warning
4) Fire warning shot into the air, tell them to leave
5) Aim at them and try to hit foot

Honestly if it gets to step 5 the guy is probably on drugs.

I'll shoot one of his kneecaps out and call the police.

Oh wait, I live in Germany so I can't have a gun. Never mind, I'll just let him have the damn iPad.

You're way too nice, dude--sight of a firearm is all the warning anyone should need.

No. The guy is doing me a favour stealing that overpriced hardware from me.

Besides, killing a guy would create a large amount of legal troubles, bawwing relatives, and paperwork that takes time out where I could be sitting around playing video games.

No, he's doing me a favor, especially if he's smashing the bastard child of an kindle and an ipod.

wow considering I'm a gun owner I'm actually surprised at the amount of people who said they would shoot, personaly I value a person, and their long term quality of life far more than a mere personal possession, even some misguided criminal creep who was trying to steal my hard earned goods/cash.
Bringing a fire arm or any other weapon for that matter into a confrontation with a criminal is not going to "calm down deescalate or control the scenario either".
By the very nature of what they are doing they are proving they have some serious issues, weather they are mental, moral or drug induced. Displaying, brandishing or pointing a weapon may have some seriously disproportionate side effects, to the mere theft of a personal possession.

I'd threaten whoever tried to steal my iPad. But if we assume that it's either shoot him/her or lose the iPad, then no, I wouldn't. An iPad is worth less than a human life. (Yes, I know gunshots aren't necessarily lethal, but still.)

Not shoot. That's a crime, probably attemted murder. Claiming self-defence will not help you, as the thief probably came unarmed.

I'dd point the gun at him, and if that doesn't work, maybe hit him with it, depending on the size...
