In such an event, I'd probably be too busy pummeling the would-be thief with my fists to really consider a gun I might be carrying. Then again, I wouldn't be caught dead buying an iPad.

That's what I think too! Unfortunatly, here in the US to the best of my knowledge, I think you can get sued by the burgler if you hurt them while they are robbing your house. I think most of those are dismissed, but the fact that they are able to infuriates me.

Pointless really, shooting someone over materialistic things ... now that's a retarded idea.

Defense of property, no
Defense of family, yes

Property can be replaced, family cannot.

However, if someone breaks into my home, I do not know if they are after my property or family, so I'm liable to shoot them assuming the latter. Not that I can shoot; I don't own a gun. Which is precisely why I keep a hammer by my bed.

However if you do shoot, shoot to kill. Having the person survive is just begging to have them sue you for hospitalization, medical expenses and other such damages.

Unfortunately, that is still murder in Canada. I really wish it wasn't, I'd draw a thief's death out too.

you can only call it self defence if theyd threatened you with a pistol first right

the whole equal force response

drawing the thiefs death out is pretty fucking sadistic man

that where you definetly go to the mental home

killing them because you felt threatened and they wouldnt leave i could understand

I find it rather disturbing how many people are willing to shoot a man over an iPad...

Aren't we getting a little too attached to our gimmicks here?

first of al, I can't shoot guns and don't have any(illigal in my country and I like it that way).

even if I had a gun and could use it in a proper way I wouldn't, because I am a massive coward.

I would either not shoot or aim for nonlethal. I'm all for injuring the bastard but I couldn't kill.

It's an iPad. It's an expensive toy. I'm not going to punch holes in someone with a small explosion over something like that.

I'd grab them, punch them, whatever else. Shooting them is just nuts; even if you shot at the leg there's no guarantee you won't hit a major artery, cause untold damage to their joint so they can't walk the same again or just, y'know, miss and hit them somewhere worse/your own property/someone entirely innocent.

I wouldn't shoot unless he was posing an immediate risk to killing me or someone I loved. Otherwise, I'd try and take him out without killing him.

People who lie in wait outside a store for a wimpy looking guy who buys something expensive that they want, are fundamentally evil people. Preying on the weak for personal gain is always evil. We sue companies for do it, we impeach government officials for doing it, we go to war when governments do it. I'd shoot the damn bastards knee caps off if he tried to steal from me in this way and if someone came into my home, threatened my family and tried to take my hard earned possessions well then I'd put that bullet between their eyes.

Some people might argue that preying on the weak is human nature but higher consciousness is meant to help us overcome this. These peope know what they're doing is wrong, they have to accept the consequences.

Maybe, but only in a non-lethal place, like a foot or shoulder. Not that I would have a gun, or buy an iPad..

There are many situations where I would lethally defend my property, and that includes against the police if such a situation were to arrive.

In this paticular situation though it's your basic smash and grab. Chances are I wouldn't try and shoot the guy because losing the iPad wouldn't be worth the jail time. Not to mention the fact that firing a gun at someone over something like this outside of a store where there could be a lot of innocent people around would be irresponsible and too risky in proportion to the crime.

Someone mugging me with a weapon, or breaking into my home is something entirely differant however. In such cases I feel a lot of the relevent laws are wrong to begin with. By the same token the only time the police might be after my stuff is if some part of my sci-fi/fantasy collection was deemed obscene after all these years (unlikely) and I was a victim of an seizure/arrest. In such a case my belief in freedom of expression is sufficient where I would probably go down fighting (and be reported as a whack job doubtlessly) rather than be arrested for it.

The idea of me fighting a police seizure is of course hypothetical since I doubt it will ever happen given what I have. I do however have some concern over cases where people have been raided for imported hentai and such (covered here) because of the precedent it establishes and I feel once you open that door once the definition of what it applies to is likely to get broader and broader. Start out with one case that is somewhat justified (even if pushing the definition of the laws) and next thing you know the snowball has travelled downhill far enough where it can crush a house.

I would shoot their right shoulder first. That way they couldn't pull their own gun on me (in south Africa you gotta be careful.) Then I would point it at their knee and tell them to F*** off before I qualify them for a disability pension.

As far as I reckon, the law should be changed so that when people enter someone else's private residence with the intent to steal, maim or vandalise - they should lose their rights as a human being. *SNIP*
Then you'll hear about alot of shootings where people have invited someone they don't like over and shot them saying its 'defence'. It's not that black & white. To be honest a taser would be far more effective, more entertaining, more painful for the attacker and you don't have the attempted murder issue (since tasers are classified as non lethal weapons).
Indeed. Also I'm glad we don't have many guns here in the UK. I'd be in prison!

But yeah if someone breaks in and I have a shotgun I'm gonna make some noise!
