So I just started playing Dawn of War and realised why I suck so much at online rts's. I am way to defensive. I rely way to much on buildings and turrets while the asshole is busy building 10 barracks and making 100 footmen to kick down my door. So are you Offense or Defense?
Captcha: Fish and chips. Yeah I'm in the U.S we call 'em french fries.

Your inability to correctly name chips sickens me.
OT: Defense, with a LITTLE offensive just to break up any troops sent my way.

I second that - you are the reason we can't have nice things.

OT: I suck pretty hard at RTSes. I get too locked into one thing - be it offence or defence and I usually lose because of that. I just plain blow giant donkey balls at macroing. It's more often offence, though.

Sort of both? When I play strategy games, I always default to locking down resources and trying to win by attrition. Depending on the game, this is either a good strategy or a terrible strategy.

I generally prefer to go defensive, I build up a massive wall of Bunkers/Turrets and then slowly move said wall forward, softening up harder targets with Artillery & Hit-and-Run units. If a direct offensive is required I prefer to do so with the heaviest units possible.

Both.

I usually defend with a wall of projectiles from my most offensive, top tier units, which also usually have high armour and health.

I'm not one to build walls, shields or turrets, but I will park a few Baneblades, Dreadnought's and Terminators in my base, backed up by Scouts to constantly repair them, or garrison structures with as much offensive firepower as possible.

If I had to choose though, I suppose I would lean towards defence as I'd my rather field a couple of tough Ogryn or Nob squads than use any "Glass Cannon" Eldar units.

Chips are chips, french fries are french fries... there is a difference, y'know... -_-

Anyway, OT:

For most strat games, my strategy can be summed up as follows: capture & consolidate.

Unfortunately, video game systems aren't really geared toward my preferred school of warfare (i.e. manoeuvre) because they don't have any concept of 'lines of communication' and the inherent defensive qualities of newly acquired holdings (including the necessity of a garrison) is a fickle factor indeed and one I dislike having to deal with, along with the enemy's capacity to recruit. Hence, capture & consolidate. Every time I've lost ground in an RTS/TBS, it's because I've given it, and you can be sure I'll be pissed off until I get it back.

Far too offensive, I play games to have fun but it seems as if everyone else deploys their line and then goes off to have a beer or something. I've been playing Fall of the Samurai recently and they've even found a way to camp on water.

British people call french fries chips and chips crisps. Fish and chips really means fish and french fries in England. That's why I said that.

Ah, the joys of the language barrier! XD

We call french fries (US) 'french fries (UK)' or 'chips (UK)' depending on context. And yes, we call chips (US) 'crisps (UK)', heaven only knows why you guys call it what you call it...(!)

(UK talk here...) 'Fries' are exclusively... well, fried and are of the slim sort (x-section 1/4cm[sup]2[/sup] approx.), while chips can be grilled and tend to be much chunkier (read: manlier!). And let's not forget the wedge.

...

Where's Daystar Clarion when you need 'im, he's much better at this sort of shit!! =P

Offense, no matter how hard I try to focus on defense, I just don't have the patience. This is the case for pretty much every genre. In Metal Gear Solid 3, instead of sneaking around like you're supposed to, I just ran from check point to check point dodge rolling into all of my enemies, get shot dead and restart at the most recent checkpoint.

I always play very defensively until I can get the best units and march them on my enemy.
Works fine against bots. Not so much in actual games.

Defense is offense and offense is defense you cannot actually win any battle if you are just one of those alone *resumes meditating*

OT depends on the game Total war games more defensive RTS' like C&C totally more offensive

I'm a defensive player. That's why playing as TEC Loyalists in SOASE Rebellion is a dream come true for me. Fuck your Novalith Cannons.

As the old saying goes, the best defence is a good offence. It's a saying I try to stick to in strategy games as far more often than not it works.

In short I'm a defensively minded strategist that forces himself to play offensively in the name of proper defence.

I'm the same. Back in the day when I played Age of Empires I was all about defense. When I played LAN against my friend he was total offense so it always ended in a stalemate. We decided to team up and play 2 vs 2 and because the other guys each played mix of offense+defense they would always loose to us sense they were never fully invested in one or the other.

Defense always seemed to be the better option as the enemy will always use more resources than me when attacking so when he is done with his temper-tantrum than i'll come at them like a hurricane.

Although, i'll switch to offense if the situation calls for it.

Both. I build a massive wall of defensive units around my base. I then create another massive wall of OP units. I then send those in and kill everyone, while leaving a small force to madly defend myself.

Think of it like Age of Empires. I create a three layered wall around my town centre. I then create fifty big daddies. I then send twenty five of those into battle to kill everyone while the remaining ones fire rockets at any knight heading my way on a pathetic horse. YOUR HORSE IS NO MATCH To MY SEDAN WITH ROCKETS!

Defensive.

The thing is, effective defense is really no less active than effective offense. You already have the advantage of relatively constant and effective firepower, but once your opponent knows where your static defenses are, they gain the advantage of time and planning...which is generally around the time I start shifting where my "static" defenses are. Once they start realizing I'm shifting my buildings on them, I put out decoys. And once they reach my base, I've had plenty of time to build my own resources and ambush units.

I call it, "The Trolling Turtle."

Also depends on the game, of course.
