Like half-Soap McTavish (gritty, badass, always a 2nd plan) half-Freeman (does what needs to be done) and half-generic insecure guy.

Chuck it all together you get: A war criminal with SAS service under his belt trying to stop his town being taken over with Guerilla warfare tactics.
Now that would make a game :)

Include the epic Scottish voice and I'm in. But remove any aspect of Freeman.
Not overly Freeman. Doesn't talk, yes. Not a HEV suit, just does what needs to be done. And get Kevin McKidd to do the voice, ahhh, this is a defo Escapist project!

This would change from game to game. A suave, cool headed, thinker would not be a good hero in say, God of War, while in a game like Assassins Creed it would work pretty well. I don't like just generic hero X, but a hero that fits the story.

Someone who isn't too described, so their character would be based on what you do in-game, and not pre-determined.
It just feels weird when you play a character that the designers has made to be like osmething specific, lets say gentleman, and then you make him act completely off character.

So i guess i prefer the "empty shell" protangonist, and then leave the cool personallities to key NPC's

But i've always been more of a sucker for world design than characters or story.

I don't understand. Are you asking us what we think of when we hear the phrase "game hero," or are you asking us what sort of game hero archetype is our favorite?
Archetype. Which one appeals to you the most if you had to choose one of them as being a story?s main protagonist.
Well then, I guess I don't really know. I like the heroes that seem to have real motivations and character to them; an everyman is great. These are pretty few and far between, though. All I can really think of is Max Payne.

Just someone... Normal. All of those that you described seem so stereotypical, sometimes heroes need to be unwitting and unlikely. What's entertaining about a big huge marine doing big huge marine things? Games should have untrained, normal people thrown into these situations.

Make them seem flawed and human. Who wants to play an invincible giant who could rip a tank in half with his bare hands? I've always loved Ratchet and Clank 1 because of what Ratchet is. He's a mechanic who finds a robot that takes him on a galaxy-spanning adventure to try to stop a much bigger and stronger force of evil. He seemed like an actual person, too, because he's fighting even though he doesn't want to. He wants nothing more than to drop the little robot off a cliff and go back home. Isn't that what a real person would want to do in that situation?

They have to be interesting. Not just a stone faced emo kid with a giant sword. Give each main character a unique personality.

None of these options really appealed (I'm more interested in the role of the anti-hero, personally). However, that said, the lesser evil of the bunch was the silent loner type - seems to have the most potential to develop as a character perhaps.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot this was a poll and just wrote some basic ideas of my own. I chose the loner, but none really fit me all that well.

1. A fish out of water character. GTA has lots of these. He doesn't know anything about the game world around him. When other characters explain things to him they have been explained to us too. This guy explains it very well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfBhi6qqFLA

2. An everyman character. So I can project myself into the character and get into the story. Character creator can help this by making the everyman character a 'you character'.

3. A paragon/rogue character. I want to be a hero and do things that help other protagonists. I'd also like to have the ability to break the rules and fight alone should that be more fun.

GTA, Saints Row and ME2 (though I just started playing) do this really well.

I want to see the third and fouth characters mixed.

We all know the queen likes it rough!

A brutish well dressed character, which likes afternoon tea and a good old-fashioned bar brawl?

so.... Ray Winstone?
