i got one word for the best villian MEGABYTE, he was awsome he was strong, smart, sophisticated when things were in his control, but never shy to show a little bit of his natural brutality when needed. my favorite scene with him was when he shot bob into the web, his face before he hit the button, WOW love that scene

Depends what you're going for.

If you want the player to know the villain instantly, you want them to be mysterious, obviously avoiding the hero, but still a good match etc in my eyes

I'll always love the "burn things to watch them burn" chaotic evil though in a Villain.

As for Heroes? Oooh, go Sherlockey holmsey, make them seem brilliant as a specimen but also have some bad, yet interesting qualities.

Why is this a poll?

Your villain should depend on your story. If you have a standard, like "Romantic" story, (not romance) he's just the guy who's at the castle at the end. If you have a cat-and-mouse type thing, where he's there all the time opposing you, then he's just the inversion of your main character, frustrating all his efforts.

This turned into a great place for links though, and I think I myself will follow most of them! TVtropes dot com, you say? Don't mind if I do!

Nah nah nah...

If you're forcing me to consider human beings, then I give you the notion of one Trent Massarino, head of MassaCorp Industries. (Mind you, Trent is mine, so try not to rip my off in totality here.)

Trent is a smooth businessman-looking fellow. He dressed in an expensive black Italian suit and a pair of matching shoes which may have cost him a small fortune. He carries a cane (which he doesn't actually need to walk, mind you) with a crimson skull-top. He smiles, nearly always, like he's just heard the best joke in the world and you missed it. Most importantly, if Trent were played by a Hollywood actor, the best likeness for him would be Al Pacino. His voice would sing with devilish charm and evil intent, confident and cunning and humorous. Trust a man who's actually played The Devil to be a good role-maker for Trent.

The best villains are puppet masters who you don't even know exist until you have already killed an imposter who does all the dirty work. A genius, with a goatee of course, who knows everything that has happened throughout the course of the plot. I think it is a good idea, but not necessary, for the player to know this villain exists but not who he is or the level of control he actually has.

For me, I tend toward the "Knight Templar" for my villain. Someone who could have been a hero, had things gone differently, someone who isn't evil in a "just wants to watch the world burn" kind of way (a la Kefka), but who had good intentions, and (perhaps) was once a hero, before being persuaded to do evil.

Someone who thinks what they do is right, and for the greater good. A conflicted person, who views themselves as having to make tough choices to benefit others. I like well-intentioned extremists for my villains.

And I like the sense that the villain is a real person, which his own motivations and background, not some nebulous evil who can already orchestrate everything from afar.

The very best villians are REAL people (fictional ones, but believable ones). They have their good sides and they have their bad sides. They have a justification for doing what they do, whether you agree with it or not (and they very best ones will make you sympathise with their villainy).

I actually like the really psychopathic villains... They kill for fun and do it in bizarre ways. Basically, someone you can really hate and who is capable of doing gruesome stuff without hesitation.

I want my villains to be seriously fucked up!

Calm, collected and not afraid to die for there ideals. I hate it when I villain gets all cowardly right before the end. Its the ones who go down in a final blaze of glory with a smile on there faces that I enjoy reading/writing about

This guy [http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Lord_Nemesis]

He's a 100 year old clockmaker who has an army of Steampunk robots. Not only that, but he's so conniving that he plays a hand in almost every major event, effectively using his Steampunk automatons to impersonates others, shifting the blame from himself and distracting the multitude.
