meh, there are prettier rocks out there, like the opal that has been mentioned above, but I'm not much of a ring person anyway.

Instead I wanna hear you guy's opinion on this one: Engagement/Wedding broadswords!
Think about it, not only is it a symbol of nobility, chivalry and strength, but also symbolises your trust in her/him that they won't use this weapon on you, and states your wish to see them safe.

It also makes a nice addition to home security, if I were burgling in someones house and I'm confronted with some angry half-naked ************ with a sword, I bail.

in fact, why would you use a ring at all, surely there are more awesome things to symbolise love and commitment?

Jeez I like the idea but I don't know of too many ladies who would agree to it. A broadsword might be too big for her! And it's not like you show off your wedding broadsword in public.

If my girlfriend were to get me a silver and amethyst ring, that would be far more worthwhile to me than a diamond or gold.
Jeeze, that sounds good, actually. I should shop tis idea around.

Try telling your girlfriend that. Sure it will go down well.
In my case, my girlfriend is anti-diamond. I'd be glad to tell her that.

So the idea of spending a month of your salary on a ring was a sort of down payment on the wedding.
Technically, it's a down payment on the nookie.

Also, while the concept of the engagement ring can be considered new, it's not without precedent. Additionally, since a 20th century man could still be held under promise laws, it was unnecessary.

diamonds are not all that rare. Its price is kept high artificially. Diamonds are common despite popular portrayal.
Thank God some people know this.

Diamonds are why children in Africa are forced to work in mines and have their hands chopped off by rival warlords as an object and abject lesson.

Diamonds can not be sniffed out by dogs and can be unidentifiable so they are the main staple for criminal organizations and terrorist groups.

The sooner diamonds are no longer highly sought after the sooner the world will be a better place. I will never buy diamonds, never.
I wonder how well diamonds would sell if they disclosed the actual costs.

By extension, you're saying that ALL jewelry is "worthless".

Ever heard of symbolism? Luxury? Statement of class? Feeling pretty?

Just because those things have no worth to YOU doesn't mean they're worthless to everyone.

So will Miss Right be wearing a bikini mail wedding dress? Or will we go classical and go for a more traditional medievil gown.

Are diamond rings almost entirely pointless? Sure.
Should this bother you or even become an issue? No.

The reason is simple, we as humans have a TON of traditions or even day-to-day habits that are almost entirely pointless.
Why make a special meal just because it's someones birthday?
Why give gifts on special occasions instead of when it's immediately needed?
Why would you spend your free time doing something that doesn't expand your mind or improve your life skills?
etc.

More to the point though:
Depending on your traditional upbringing, a ring acts as a symbol of your relationship.
It helps random people know that you're taken.

This is particularly how I think about jewellery, it's worthless and pointless, improves nothing and is practically worthless as well.

However, what should be said is that is my opinion. You have to understand that others don't believe that sort of line of thought. To others it is worth something and means something... for some reason.

As for diamonds being worthless, I would say it has what value someone puts on it but for an engagement ring I was thinking a heart-shaped ruby surrounded by her birthstone (whatever it may be) on a silver band with a swirled engraving on it.

The ring makes sense in my head.

Nice! You gotta wear a suit to a wedding right? No one said it couldn't be a suit of armour.

I think this calls for a little review of Adam Smith's Paradox. Adam could not understand why water was so cheap even though it was so essential to life and diamonds were so expensive even though no one would be affected it they were to disappear tomorrow. Its all about marginal utility aka, the satisfaction of having a diamond compared to water. Water is so plentiful and abundant in our developed societies that were barely really care about how valuable it is, but a diamond could be a once in a lifetime gift.

Anyways, I can't really decide atm if I would be giving my "lover" a diamond ring for a marriage or whatever the occasion could be. Sure, symbolically it would be substantial, but economically it might not be the best move.

Hmmmmm.... This thread has taught me a many things about Diamonds. I have come to the conclusion that Diamonds should no longer be used for Jewelery, but instead that should be used to create Bullets, because that would be kinda kick ass.

Based on the counterarguments I'm being presented with, that appears to be the case, yes.

Hey wait! Diamonds are not worthless! They are like the only material in Minecraft that can mine Obsidian. Without Obsidian you can't get into the Nether, not to mention that diamonds craft the most powerful weapons and armor. Plus you need Diamonds to make an Enchantment Table. Based on those facts alone, your argument is invalid. :)P)

From what I was aware, Lab grown diamonds are perfect for industrial applications, and (It's coming from a second hand source, my old science teacher), they actually are almost indistinguishable from the natural ones. With a difference. Natural ones have higher amounts of flaws, due to impurities and imperfections in their formation. Lab ones don't have these in the same way. That's the way that jewellers can tell them apart: That one's too good to be true etc. While some flaws add value (In rarer circumstances), mostly they're undesirable. The rating of lab diamonds as being worth less is just more exploitation by the jewellery industry. That was his rant anyway.

Yeah, Diamonds are kind of bullshit. Not that rare, often horribly obtained, and an extravagant bit of jewelery that is kinda hard to notice. No matter how good your ring is, clothes are more visible, your car is more visible, really, it's kinda odd to spend so much on a tiny item which is for display purposes. Sure, there's a bunch of "traditions" surrounding their use, but screw that. Buying into bullshit because bullshit has become embedded in society seems like something I'd have to lobotomize myself to convince myself of.

If you want to get something that shows off real well? Get an Egyptian style headdress. No-one will miss it, and it'll stand out. Just for more obnoxious status gain, place a neon sign on the back that says "I'm taken." Stylin'.

I don't like the idea of marriage in the first place (not that I wouldn't want to be tied down, but I find the whole marriage process to be needlessly exhausting, stressful and expensive), but Gods forbid some woman find me suitable to waste her life hanging around, I'd sincerely hope she felt the same way.

Personally I find all forms of jewellery to be quite pointless, especially diamonds. You're paying for a clear stone! Why not glass?
