I recently decided to play through Final Fantasy 8 again out of boredom. I was at the end of disc one and watching the entire sniper sequence when I realized its completely impossible.

(this next paragraph is me trying to explain this W/O visual aids... if you want, just go here to youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRzpQadrwAU&feature=related its the cutscenes during the sniper sequence.) So, Near the end of disc 1, you and your party are tasked with assassinating the evil sorceress that Galbedia has made their ambassador. The assassination is to be carried out during a parade in the sorceress's honor. The sniper and leader are to ride a carousel clock to the roof of the presidential residence to get a good shot while three others trap the sorceress in a giant gateway in the center of the city. The float will start at the presidential residance, round the entire city, return to the residance, and go through the center of the city. Do you see the problem yet?

The sniper could NEVER make the shot because the float is facing the wrong way. "BUT WAIT!" i hear the people cry "the cutscene shows that the bullet was gonna hit the sorceress from the front!" and I thought the same. But, unfortunately, when the leader, Squall, runs up to the gate, it shows that the float is turned around with its back to him. so, unless he drove around the entire city to get to the gate, it was an impossible shot.

I was just wondering if anyone else saw it.

I like the squall is dead theory... I mean sometimes I'm not in the mood to play a cracked out love story. So it's good I can switch over to a cracked out love story DREAM OF A DYING BOY.

OT: I honestly never noticed that. But here's what I did notice, when Edea stops the bullet...the back of the float is not behind her.

so... does that mean that Irvine aimed for Edea through the back of the float? that seems even more unlikely! also: I also kinda like the "Squall is dead" thing, it turns a mediocre love story into a very interesting analysis of the brain. I mean that in the way that the brain invents such fantastical things in order to explain simple things (such as the whole "we are all connected by our childhood" scene from Trabia where it is explained that they came together because of fate instead of just because.)

Holy crap... that makes no sense. Good catch.

It's still such an epic scene. I don't get all the hate for ff8. It's one of my favorites.

The only reason that I see for people to hate FF8 is that the leveling system is kinda bad. While trying to make a game challenging throughout through level scaling is good to a certain degree, the game is kinda bad at doing it. I have started too many games of FF8 to count and always end up overleveling myself and getting demolished. It was only after looking at some guides that I understood that levelling without the certain bonuses that you get later in the game was very counterproductive.

All very interesting, but...as I voted...why are you playing this?!

There's a bit more bad about the game than leveling. I honestly tried to get into it, and found all of the characters unlikeable, the system and weapons and powers and leveling terrible, and the plot to be entirely bullshit. The leveling system is quite possibly the worst offender, but when you get down to it...it's everything but the music.

Well, really the only reason I'm playing it is because I have yet to beat it. really, thats the only reason. But you have to admit that some of the cutscenes are pretty cool. On the plot, however, the only way to actually like it is by believing the "squall is dead" theory. without that its just a silly little story about how its not good to be self enclosed and shut yourself out from the world or something like that. With the theory in mind its actually kinda decent. but in the end the theory kinda reminds me of the indoctrination theory from Mass Effect 3. Its just a simple attempt by the fan base to explain why something happened and that it was awesome.

When I heard about it, I thought it was interesting, but it's still a piss-poor game, so no love from me.

This was actually the pint where I threw my hands up and quit that mess. That game is just bad, and I felt bad playing it. The problems are numerous, the plat and the character's actions (all of them) were downright insulting.

I commend (possibly fear) the person with the constitution it takes to tolerate his game.

[modest hyperbole ends here]

No complaints here, everyone has their own tastes and preferences.

Sadly yes, when I looked at my friend and said "wait, would the shot come from the wrong way?"

Yes, the characters are pretty much some of the blandest people I have ever met. All but (maybe) two of them develop in any degree and even then it isn't much.

I see all the hate, but I've never really got it. It's perhaps my favorite of the series. Well, except for FF3 (american 3, supernes.) But the bland characters (uggh, zell and irvine are the worst) and the weak story didn't really bother me. It's a JRPG, I've yet to find freakin' Hemmingway in ANY JRPG so it didn't get to me, it never does.

But I never got the hate on the level system. It's one of the few JRPGs I can even play thru a second time. I hate grind. I know it's weird, but I like RPGs of any kind, but can't stand grind. And VIII is without a doubt, no argument against valid, the LEAST grind-y FF game ever made. Draw to 100 (usually only takes one or two fights) and junction... BOOM grinding complete. Grinding for exp and levels was totally pointless, as carrying full junctions made you seriously OP for just knifing thru the game utilizing proper exploits. PC version with emulated pocketstation gigachocobo getting rare items... I can complete in about 4 hours. A good length for the weak story.

All the haterz (about the system anyway) seem to love the grind, but are kind of half-hearted and lazy going about it. If you junction up and blast thru like me, it works as a system. If you grind it up the whazoo and OP up to full, it works as a system. If you half-heartedly grind up a little and try for some kind of medium pace (no not the Adam Sandler medium pace) it does break down the difficulty curve. That frustrated players and I guess I do get it.

What I don't get is what is so great about samey, assembly line, grind? I have other games to play... plus you know a job and a life. I don't get the appeal of grindfest RPGs.

Funny, I've been playing this very same game properly for the first time these last few days and played through that event two days ago. I have to say I didn't find the fact Irvine was able to take that shot from a vantage point behind the float surprising at all (as there was a chance of a successful shot due to the design of the chair on the float) but rather his bullet ended up anywhere near Edea after he was shaking and saying he couldn't do it mere seconds beforehand. I wholely expected him to hit one of the gates that had just been dropped to trap the float, the float itself or completely overshoot the target.

How didn't anyone see it? The scene was so jarring that it stuck out like a saw thumb. Nevertheless, I think the point is moot, continuity errors is often down to poor editing.

Ha, I never noticed that and I've played this game more than any other game, ever. I guess I'm just not observant.

Yeah it's my favourite too, I think people only dislike it because of the junctioning system which really isn't as hard as people make it out to be.

Yeah i think i vaguely remember noticing this when i played it but decided to ignore it as it was to awesome a scene.

The junctioning system was bad ass i loved it! :) people who struggled needed to spam draw more from bosses. A friend of mine missed out on SO MANY GF's x_x by not drawing on everything that moved, especially bosses!

Get a stack of ultima junction it to squalls attack, keep him low on hp, spam renzoukuken gg :3

Also the Gardens could fly... that was just to awesome x) really should go back and play this game again i could never get Seifers gunblade to proc with R1 though :(
