Well I was playing Oblivion recently and I found myself trying to get my Alteration up to 100 so I wouldn't have to go back to town every 5 minutes to sell my stuff (Now I'm up to 10 minutes!) when it hit me; is this really how I should be playing the game? I might as well be playing WoW!"

So I wondered, have any of you ever found yourself grinding a certain skill in Oblivion? Do you feel grinding is "the wrong way"?

Let me think...

*Remembers chasing Summoned Skeleton with Turn Undead for easy Conjuration*
*Remembers attacking Summoned Skeleton for easy Blade/Hand to Hand*
*Remembers further abuse of Skeleton*

Yes, although I usually did it while waiting for someone or while I was travelling, so it was a sort of "In the mean time" thing.

The only reason to grind in Oblivion is to either max out, or because you made a bad class.

It's been a while since I've played that game, but I remember getting my sneak skill up to the max. I'm sure I did so with other skills as well, but I didn't do it on my first play through. That's how I typically do games. Play it normally the first time around, then use shortcuts, etc. if I decide to play it again.

I don't think grinding is bad, just one way of playing the game. It can make things easier earlier on. So if you want more of a challenge, don't grind, simple.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I ran around the beautiful game world doing quests and killing monsters. The little thing popping up in the top-left corner telling me so-and-so has increased was just a minor hint that I was progressing in some form. I could not have cared less what my skill had suddenly become.

Then again, I never had a real -high- level character like some people do. The game was fun for me that way. Auto-running at a wall isn't exactly how someone should be trying to enjoy their game, in my opinion.

I haven't played too much, but I never needed/wanted to grind. I never saw the need.

I try to grind some of my skills, but it's more to get my levels up faster so I can fight the stronger enemies and get better gear.

I don't think of it as grinding, and here's why.
In real life, if you want to get good at something, what do you do? You sit down and practice for a while. Sometimes for a long while. Oblivion was trying its damnedest to emulate this kind of thing, so there were points at which my character had to "practice" certain skills in order to get good at them. Kinda like the training montages in Rocky movies.
Only more swords.

I never really did on my first play through except if I needed to waste some time. But now that I'm playing again I'm finding that I need to grind to complete certain quests.

I was always tempted to leave my character stealth-walking into the wall before the first Goblin in the tutorial dungeon to max out sneak, pity it takes a good half-hour just to get it into the mid 50s.

I found Oblivion's levelling system to be really unimmersive simply because it encouraged this sort of play. It was far easier to train by simply repeating an action than by either practical application or assigning points gained when levelling up would have been.

Erm -- I maxed out my stealth skill in Oblivion just by trailing people in a city so yes, I did find myself grinding. But then again, I wholeheartedly enjoy mindless repetitive tasks so I imagine I was very amused while doing it.

There's really no point in grinding in Oblivion, as the rest of the game scales up with your level.

Nope probably because I got distracted very easily, if something was too hard I'd just do a different quest or go exploring and comeback later. To those that needed to grind maybe you should turn the difficulty down a notch.
