The short of it is she'd have been much better (in my humblest of opinions) if the devs hadn't gone so far out of their way to design her to be an asexual joyless stereotype of feminist independence.
How was she an asexual joyless stereotype? I don't get that impression at all.
First of all, apologies, I meant to write "joyless asexual stereotype", but proofing can have it's issues.

Secondly, I don't imagine the brainy rebellious daughter of a brilliant scientist would resemble a sexually ambiguous emaciated 20 year old man in that oh-so-subtle dirty jeans look.

For all her smarmy tude-flinging, what use was she? Oh, that's right, one long rescue/escort mission. Hoo-ray! I guess the more independent women are the more bullets I get the watch them take before I have to reload the game and remember where I put that damned gnome once I'm finished "covering her" while she takes her bloody time explaining the obvious or pushing some buttons or whatever else her genius allows her to accomplish...

...which in part explains the joylessness. Other than having the personality of drippy grits, watching her cutely ham it up with dad between all the winking and nudging I couldn't help wishing they'd have allowed me to use the gravity gun to pick up Dog and fire it at her until she was a fine pulp.

It's just my opinion, which is neither correct nor incorrect, and bob-2000 did ask for it.

This is what stereotypical joyless asexuality looks like to me.

OT: Any other day I'd say no but today I'm gonna go ahead and just say...no.
That's from Scrubs isn't it? It sounds familiar but, I can't remember who said it.

Looking back, I actually liked Alyx. Not in the romantic sub-plot type way but, more in the: if every other character dies, I don't care, but if she died, then that would have sucked, way; if that makes any sense.

You do not know how many times I have rewatched her getting a stun baton lodged in her face. *Watches again* Take that you annoying jerkwad! I really like how they managed to downplay how annoying she was.

Yes, the game did kind of force Alyx upon you as the "romantic interest" character, when frankly I had no idea who the hell she was.
Plus there is the age difference. I am not quite sure, but Freeman looks to be at least in his 40s, while Alyx may in fact still be a minor. (Although that is only on the box. Due to the lack of cutscenes, reflective surfaces, or legs when you look down there is no in game evidence that Freeman is anything more than disembodied hands.) Also, was I the only one who was bothered by the fact that her father is black (And reminds me of an old person about to drift off into an amusing anecdote) she is distinctly not black at all?
Freeman was 27 in HL1, and he was put into stasis after that. Alyx is multiracial, half black and half asian. Which is why her likeness and voice come from women of the same mix.
oh whoa I didn't notice she was half asian
guess that makes a lotta sense then

and on-topic... sure she was cool
