They were pretty meh in Assassin's Creed 1 because you couldn't do shit. Assassin's Creed 2 made it better by letting you do free roam and fighting and shit. They were pretty interesting story-wise in both games, but I would never prefer them to playing as Ezio.

Eh, not bad but I really prefer roaming around in beautiful cities like Venice and Florence over climbing around in a warehouse.

I liked them, not for the gameplay, but for the story exposition. I also liked the final fight with the Templars whne they show up at your hideout (Assassin's Creed 2).

I thought they were kind of tedious, to be honest. The story was interesting, sure, but if the entire point of those sequences was to provide exposition, why not just make it a cutscene, instead of taking away the fluid, fast-paced controls we're used to and replacing them with slow, clunky ones?

I adored them. In fact I played through a lot of the AC games just to find out what would happen in the bits OUTSIDE of the Animus. TBH I find Desmond's story to be the more tantalising one, perhaps because you see less of it. I'm genuinely hoping the next AC game after Brotherhood will focus more on what happens to Desmond - taking on Abstergo seems like fighting an unwinnable war, and I desperately want to find out what happens next.

They were somewhat annoying, but it was a way to throw some back-story at you. Plus I kinda liked pickpocketing the doctor guy and taking the girl's pass-card and reading some stuff on the laptops.

I liked the moments outside the animus. It was one of the things I was most excited for when Assassin's creed 2 was coming out. And I can't wait to see what they're gonna do for Brotherhood.

I'm a sucker for a plot I can sink my teeth into, so yes, I enjoyed them as they gave insisght into why all this shit was going down. I think the Glyph puzzles in II were even more awesome though as they meant you didn't have to go through the transition from Ye Olde Time to 20 Minutes Into The Future every time you wanted a nugget of backstory.

Needless to say, the Templar conspiracy interests me greatly in Assassin's Creed.

I actually did sort of like them. I just wish there was more to do. Honestly, the first game had much more potential to explore, but they kept us confined to just one room (okay, fine, two rooms, maybe even three, but all were boring) when we could have done so much more. There was a bathroom with no purpose, since you couldn't go, and I would have loved it if Desmond was able to find a ventilation shaft or something in there to snoop around and dig up some of abstergo's secrets. But no, all you can do is sleep and check some guy's email.

Either way, it was a nice way to break up the somewhat repetitive gameplay in AC1, sort of like the breaks in MST3K where the viewers took a break from too many jokes (you win a cookie if you know what I'm talking about.)

I think Assassin's Creed 2 had a good balance between outside and inside the Animus though.

Well the first AC it was pretty painful because you can barely do shit. It was only there to drive the ludicrous plot forward. I actually thought they were handled much better in ACII. The conspiracy plot was still ludicrous but they still managed to make it interesting (Especially with The Truth puzzles), and at least you were able to move around more and climb stuff later. They also spent less time there too. I believe there are only three major Non-Animus sections in ACII (The beginning, the middle, and the end), and there was at least more action to make actually playing in them feel somewhat necessary.
