Shotgun... I care not for what some guide says. The ammo is fairly common and you can reload your own shells with shot which is useful in a survival situation. You can also keep up a constant rate of slow fire if necessary (fire-load 1 shell-fire and so on). Failing that a pair of Colt 1911s because 10mm rounds arn't that rare and they have good stopping power. Not necessarily to be used akimbo, more so I can pull second one if there is not enough time to reload.

A zombie thread without a shotgun option? For shame.

Shotgun is a bad choice actually. Best option would be a long range rifle, a pistol for short to mid range zombies, and a crowbar or katana for melee range.

Shotun's are TRADITIONAL though.

And really, you don't need a long range rifle. A .22LR is more than enough. If you really want range, then I'd just stick with standard assault rifle calibers (5.56x45, 7.62x39/51, 6.8, etc). Anything that shoots anything larger is going to be too large and heavy. I can't wait till I can afford to ship a Tavor from Canada. =D
