I may sometimes use a walkthrough if I get ridiculously stuck on something (ie Running around in circles for half an hour trying to find out what to do)but rarely actual cheats (unless you count that as cheating).

I play games for the story. If I want a challenge I'll play something with online multiplayer, like TF2. I usually play on the easy setting and play with cheats because I usually rent games and I'd like to beat it before the due day. However beating the game in two days or less usually makes me quite angry. It's not a matter of how easy a game is but how long it takes to play it with or without cheats. Usually difficulty is just a way to artificially lengthen play time.

I use cheats after the first playthrough.

I start on the easiest difficulty, then after I complete it I go on to the harder/hardest difficulty eg: Kingdom Hearts II

I play on the hardest difficulty avaliable, I never cheat even after finishing the game. When playing online I like to dominate servers. I'm not a big fan of Clan play, so dominance on a public server is more than enough for me.

I never cheat, but I use a walkthrough if it's just too difficult. Running around not knowing what to do is overrated as entertainment.

I generally keep the difficulty untouched, although in heavily combat-oriented games I sometimes set it to easy - I play for the story rather than combat, so I just want to make those fights as short as possible.

A long time ago I'd cheat in some sandbox games, because I just wanted to experience everything the game has as soon as possible. Also sometimes did that in RTS games, so I could turtle out fast and then explore all the technologies, units and buildings instead of having to worry about zerg rushes early in the game. But removing the challenge just made the games boring, so I stopped doing that.

I picked experience but really I just play for fun >D and to have some outlet for my homicidal tendencies that don't involve jail time so I say pffffffft =P to people who say easy mode/cheats ruin games, if you don't like em don't use em. It ain't rocket science

I agree completely. Haven't used cheats for quite some time, except using a walkthrough for the final level of Portal, but it was 3 a.m. and I had to go to work the following day/morning.

I like a fair challenge, but rarely will I go back to play through an old game on a harder difficulty (I have noobs to frag online) because it's just not worth the time. I also never cheat, I still find ways to have fun and that's why I'm especially keen on sandbox single player games.

Never on the first run of each difficulty, otherwise what would be the point on playing on a harder difficulty. If I'm just messing around though, the cheats come on. Especially if they unlock new stuff you cant get otherwise.

I've done this since forever, I don't think there's alot of point to it but I'm a creature of habit so whatever.

When I start a game I usually start on easy mode just for the tutorial/introduction level. I'm not really sure why, it's kind of in lieu of reading any sort of instruction manuel, though these days that's generally the point of the first section anyway so I don't know. It's left over from when I was a kid and terrified of dying and didn't want to try anything remotely challenging until I was sure I knew what I was doing. Emotional scars and all that.

For the most part I play on regular difficulty. Seems to me in most games the harder difficulties just give you less health/less damage/enemies more health anyway... And there's a difference between a harder game and a longer game but I'm a lazy ****** with ADD so what do I know.

In terms of cheating I remember when I was really little (must have been 4 I think) I played Hexen: Beyond Heretic (no one has heard of this besides me I swear) on god mode with my little bro (who would've been 2) where one of us did the shooting and the other one moved the characters around. We played it without god mode in this way too though the wendigos and ifrits used to scare us pretty bad...

To be honest... I've been playing on the hardest difficulty in a couple of months now just for the challenge.
Killzone 2, BF Bad Company, UT3. All on the first time I've played that game. Just to get the challenge.

I tend to play the games on the hardest sensable mode* and i don't cheat ever if i can help it. i only sometimes do if i have betten the hardest mode*

but that could be because i tend to like the chalange above anything else.

*(and by sensable i mean aslong as it isn't one of theese modes when you have 2 hp and even the weekest enamies have a radioactive aura that could kill you in 2 sconds if you let them live that long)

I always play on Normal difficulty my first time through. If I feel like stepping it up, I'll go to Hard.

I never use cheats that make the game easier. They're called cheats for a reason. The only time I'll use them is if I've beaten the game and I want to have some fun. My brother's got a PS2 Codebreaker, and If there's a debug mode, I'm THERE.

Walkthroughs are a different story. If I'm stuck beyond all hope of figuring anything out, I'll go to one.

I'm like the above - I ignore the Bloody Stupid difficulty settings.

Typically, I try and find the difficulty that gives me the best gaming experience; I want to feel like I've accomplished something, but not via having to respawn at the last checkpoint twenty eight thousand times in the process.

However, I make it a point of pride never to set the game to 'easy' mode if I can help it... unless I'm doing something like finding the last Hidden Star and really don't want to put up with ten thousand enemies fucking me over in the process.

I usually go for the default difficulty or another medium setting. As I don't rent games (though I may be missing a trick there) I don't have to cheat to find the conclusion which is kind of handy as it means I can take as long as I like to finish a game and still (eventually) find out the ending. I play for fun but I like to be challenged (a bit) so as a general rule I don't cheat (unless I'm wasting time on 'AoE2' or 'Medieval 2: Total War').

I always play straight on Normal. No doubt about it. Then if the game is any good and has some replayability. Ill do again on harder difficulty

So, I have observed over my gaming career a lot of hostility towords gamers who play easy mode, or cheat. People tend to say that it ruins the game, but I don't see it that way.

So, do you use cheats? What difficulty do you play on?

I usually cheat after i've beaten the game, or if i'm running out of time on a rental and want to see the conclusion of the story before I have to take it back. As for difficulty I play on easy, challenge doesn't really matter to me, i'm more in the game for the fun, the experience, the story.
I want to vote for Experience and Challenge, but can't... so I won't.

A degree of challenge enhances the experience and serves to draw you into the game. Likewise, removal of all challenge tends to diminish the enjoyment of the whole thing. But extreme difficulty can cause frustration and also diminish the experience.

The trick is to find that "sweet spot" where the game is challenging but not frustrating. That way you get the most out of it. Since this varies from person to person, we have difficulty settings. Considering that most of today's games are fairly easy on the "Normal" setting dropping it to easy or cheating just makes it look like you can't handle even the normal difficulty.

Personally, I don't cheat. Heck, the closest I came to cheating in the last five years was using Shadow Keeper to redistribute some of my stat points in Baldur's Gate 2 (the total stayed the same, I just shifted them around a bit). There are games I don't finish the first time around, so I get them the next time.
