I demand that you put STALKER in the poll, right in the middle of Ninja Gaiden and Metal Slug 3.
Stalker falls under "Game designers are jerks" So I aint screwin with my poll especially since things are already set up in order of difficulty from highest to lowest.
no, ESS TEE AYE ELL KAY EE ARE falls under "Game developers are idiots" and can't debug a game as readily as they delouse their nether regions
Did you actually finish the STALKER campaign? Yes blah blah its buggy and so forth but the end of the STALKER games is almost impossible. Though I guess it does go under game designers are jerks as who actually thinks its a good idea to spawn ten enemies behind a wall with shotguns.
I found the beginning harder than the ending.

I like to feel like I've achieved something when I finish game, so I don't want it to be too easy. That said, If I'm attempting a mission for upwards of ten to fifteen times, I'm going to get annoyed.

I demand STALKER also - STALKER SHOC, not Stalker Clear Sky - everyone plays it like some Halo clone the first time through, and gets owned.

Admittedly, STALKER - Clear Sky does the same thing, but it depends on your difficulty level. Master difficulty and I am having to do whole missions without any health supplies.

However, I have to say that the game difficulty does waver a bit. The begginning of the game, on your first playthrough or so, is very difficult. Then around the middle/end sections it goes super easy when you get a load of powerful weapons and armours, and then finally the end is pretty impossible because you just don't have the right equipment, no matter how many times you reload and try and pick up the right kit.

I've not played MGS3 so I'm not sure where this fits, but my perfect difficulty setting in a game was in MoH:pacific Assault. I cranked up the difficulty to realistic (meaning it was potentially one shot kill even with an SMG against you), turned off compass, health meter, crosshairs, ammo meter and got on with playing. Frustratingly hard in places, but felt like an achievement, meant I didn't race through it, and gave me a whole new respect for anyone who fought in the Pacific theatre. (And also, a hatred for random flying sections inserted into a game).

Stalker clear sky had the best difficulty for me. Its beatable if you know the existence of quick save and quick load. The only problem in it is that you need to visit the base too often for supplies, and when you realize that you're fucked 'cause you're out of medkits or bandages you cant get back to base!!

Megaman Wily-stages are just too rough. You have to beat them all in a row and you cant save, but the robot masters them self offers a great challenge.

Completely agree with you there as to the best level of difficulty. However there's nothing wrong with a game which is hard, as long as it isn't because of bad game design. Also, the more immersive the game is the better it is when challenging (eg. in STALKER the difficulty suits the game perfectly - and its a brilliant game!)
what he said. fake difficulty causes a great rage within me. just thinking about it turns me green. and nauseous. and... oh nevermind, it still pisses me off though.

Maybe because I spent a little over $150 on Metal Slug 3 (near the end of the game I was in a very, psychotic state, and my friends stated that I looked like a rabid who'd just had his first espresso.), but aside from the retarded puzzles where you needed perfect timing down to a nano second, the difficulty on it just seemed perfect to me.
