So let me get this hypothetical and implausible situation straight, in my hands is the last copy known to man of a religion's holy texts, and the choices are, I burn it and live (longer than I was going to in the present situation), or I don't and die?

Well, if it's truly the last of its kind, then it means the religion's already died out, so there will most likely be no followers who will grief the loss of the book, I'll deeply regret it as I love history and archaeology and all that good stuff, but I'd probably burn it if it means saving my bacon, besides, what guarantee is there the text won't get damaged, destroyed or otherwise lost after my demise?

(Also, how would burning the book save my life?)

You can use it to start a fire and not freeze.

In this situation, yes. Human life, much less my life, is worth infinitely more than some book, and it's as simple as that. The only exception is maybe if I had to choose between a book and some exceptionally evil person, I'd probably end up choosing to save the book, but that person would have to be completely evil, dangerous, and insane to the point that they'd hardly even qualify as human for me to even think about it.

When it comes to survival, off culture fucks. Just create something more. It makes living completely redundant if sacrificing yourself for a cultural reason is more important than say...living.

Why is it people are so ready and willing to burn text?
Well the question in this thread was "Would you burn it to save your own life?".I love books,in fact I consider my book collection to be my most valuable possession, but if it's a choice between me and a collection of pages then onto the fire you go paper

If I was asked to just randomly burn a book for no reason then I'd refuse no matter what that book was
Really?!! Oh I apologize, my bad. Didn't read the whole post.

OT: Hmm... I think my answer stands though. I'll die a Martyr, sure. Who am I kidding, no, I don't think I'd be willing to die for that...
