Nothing used to piss me off more than having my Windows 98 computer tell me that I may have destroyed the universe because I didn't shut down Windows out 'properly'. These days I use XP and it's all about pulling your USB out 'safely'.

The times I do bother to disconnect properly I usually get the message that it can't be done right now (while the computer wakes up the harddrive). Then if I do it a second time it disconnects and I get the annoying bubble at the bottom of the screen telling me it's okay.

It's a minor annoyance but we use computers because they're supposed to make complicated things easier so little annoyances or unintuitive programming really irritates me.

I assume it's only dangerous if the computer is in the middle of transferring files. I could be wrong. How to you disconnect a USB device?

I just pull it out.
Can't be bothered to safely disconnect my device.

[sup]The chance for innuendo is huge here. Please say I'm not the only one that has noticed this.[/sup]

I really didn't even know you were supposed to do something like that. My iPod tells me I can pull it out so I pull it out... if I'm done with the mic, I pull it out.

I always safely disconnect it. I'm certainly not risking any data corruption, no matter how minute the chance.

...Yeah.
...This is in no way my fault for mentioning the innuendo thing, right?

It depends...

I've just had issues with my 1TB external because I've been just "pulling it out" and now I've gotta reformat it and it's got 235GB of stuff on it. Including photos of my 18th birthday, my trip away with my boyfriend and 150+ photos of the Star Wars exhibit.

If it's just a USB stick, it generally just gets pulled out, but now I'm thinking twice...

If you're using a mass storage device you should always safely remove the chances of corrupting data is very high. I've lost a lot of work due to some idiot just pulling my MSD out. Eventhough I'm not finished with the comp.

If I remember to pull it out, I'll go through the thing with the thing and the load. But when I usually want to get the hell outta here, I just pop it out when I have nothing on that I have to shut off to remove it.

Pull it out unsafely (there's a turn of phrase...)

It makes no difference, my new computer doesn't ask (but then again, it is broken and in the repair shop), and my old computer is too old to care.

I leave my device in the USB drive until it's completely finished doing everything it needs to do. Everything. Then, when all the data is transferred into the drive and done with, I'll pull it out, but I'll do it slowly so that none of the merchandise gets damaged.
