I always figured it was disc if you're talking about the circly plastic things you put in computers and game consoles and DVD players.

Disk only refers to the floppy kind as far as I know.
That's pretty much it as far as common use goes however dictionary.com states the 2 as being interchangeable, Disc deriving from the original Disk, the former apparently being the preferred English version, the latter being the preferred American English.

Check the entry it has more to say on the subject than you'd imagine lol

EDIT: Extracted from the entry

Computing Dictionary
disc definition
storage, spelling
British spelling of " disk", normally only used for " compact disc".

A "disc" is anything physical, round, and plastic (short for "discus", as someone mentioned above).

a "disk" refers to either a floppy diskette or a general storage device i.e. a hard drive. That's why you see the acronym HDD (hard disk drive).

I feel outnumbered, but I've always known it as disk. I'd never even seen it as disc before this thread.

According to Merriam-Websters dictionary, Disc is a variant of Disk. Both are acceptable but Disk is the original.

I think of it as "Disc" is like a discus, the "c" is round so it applies to round objects. The other is for anything that houses a disc, i.e. Floppies, HDD.

I normally spell it 'disc' when talking about a cd.

But sometimes I spell it 'disk' when writing in my native language(Danish).

For me a Disc is a CD-Rom, where as a disk is an old 3.5 hard disk. Floppy Disk to me is a personal problem. Wait, I mean its one the big old 8 inch disk. Wow I have been messing with computers for so long =/.

My friend and I were arguing over how to spell Disc (disk) like as in an Xbox 360 game disc (disk). And I was wondering, which one of us is right? So I was wondering what the all of you think is right
Both:
-Disk for magnetic based (hard disk drive, Floppy Disk, etc)
-Disc for optical based (DVD, CD, Blu-ray)
