Hey there Escapees. I, probably like many of you, went to see District 9 on its opening debut day. I went with my Mother, sister, and father as a family outing. I had high expectations due to the verbal non-sodomizing Movie Bob gave it. Well half way through i decided that this was probably my favorite movie of the year. The social commentary was great, the characters well developed, and it was a good action flick as well. However as I walked down the little ramp out of the door of the theatre i was singing its high praises when my mother gave a blatant disregard to my new favorite movie of the year. Upon further investigation, she stated that she wondered about the following things:
1) Why do the aliens like cat food? They spend so much time talking about it but never explain it.
2) If the aliens were smart enough and advanced enough to get here, why couldnt they get home? Wouldnt a race of beings that intelligent have a back up plan for running out of gas?
3)
Why was the black man at the end arrested for blowing the whistle on the company, if he'd done nothing wrong legally?

I was quick to come to the movies defense but like a brick to the 'nads I realized I couldn't come up with a substantial enough response to validate those questions.

My question to you Escapees is this: Do you have an answer to ANY of these questions? And did you like the movie?

I thought it had too many plot holes, and the aliens for some reason, reminded me of like, bad old movie aliens.

So do you agree with the questions presented?

I liked the movie a lot, and get past the whole plot holes thing if it entertains me.

But for the 2nd one they are

worker type aliens, meaning they were just like repair men and such, and couldn't pilot the ship, and couldn't find the command module. That's why Christopher was so important, he was smart enough to just that and get fuel.

Thats what i supposed but it was countered with "so theres only one smart alien in the entire race? And why werent the rest of the species looking for them?"

I loved it, it was good to see an alien movie that doesn't involve the destruction of NY or LA, or have "the best of the best!" save the bloody day.
Especially when he went nuts with the mech suit. FUCK YEAH!
1) Why would the liking for cat food need to be explained? No-one has to explain why they like pizza, it's just awesome. In fact, i think i'll go have some now.
2) Just because one person is smart enough to design a craft capable of interstellar travel, doesn't mean the whole race is. He could have been the alien equivalent of NASA. And how many times have you seen some idiot on the side of the road with an empty tank?
3) Don't know what was with that either....

My thought was that the workers had no real ambition on their own, and only did what they were told. That, and the character I mentioned was specifically trained for this.

1. It never explained it because the people in the movie didn't know.
2. The aliens were drones, not the more intelligent part of their species. They could pilot the ship but had no idea what to do when stuff started not working (command module falling out of ship). Chris was just an exceptionally smart drone that put 2 and 2 together.
3. I'm sure Mr. Evil Corp had some connections with the government, and thus had the black man arrested.

My thought was that the workers had no real ambition on their own, and only did what they were told. That, and the character I mentioned was specifically trained for this.
That question was answered through multiple small words with specific connotation.

It was shown that the reason the ship was stranded was that the command module became detached from the mother ship, and fell to the ground.

It was not explained exactly why, but it makes sense why they were stranded - imagine the Enterprise with only Red-Shirts?, and no bridge or Shatner or Nimoy.

Also, it was said they were all workers or low-level (blue collar) aliens.

Now, if you were preparing an expedition of 1,000,000 people to an unknown destination with a real chance of never seeing them again, are you going to send your best and brightest, or are you going to send the people who pump gas and flip burgers?

Also, it would appear to be a colonization mission - research or military vessels would have only the personnel they absolutely need, instead of a flying slum with a million squatters.

This likely means they were not expected to return within a rather long period, especially if they didn't know where they were going and were scoping planets as they went.

Also, interstellar communication currently travels at the speed of light - this means it takes years to talk to the nearest star to our own, so it would be unlikely the alien's home planet would even attempt to communicate with the mothership.

Also, it is among my favourite movies (along with V for Vendetta, WALL-E and Howl's Moving Castle), and
At first when he broke free and started killing everyone,
I almost cheered.

I cannot wait to see it. It looks very unique, I have no idea what to expect. I just hope it's not another BOOM! WHIZZ! POW! kind of movie.

To that I would present this: have you ever been on an airplane? If the airplane crashed, could you fix it? How many people on the flight do you think could fix the plane? I got the impression that the aliens on the ship were just a small part of the overall population, so I don't think it was one smart alien. As for why the others didn't come looking for them...well, it's a big universe ;-)

EDIT: I loved D9. It's the most fun that I've had at the movies since Star Trek earlier this summer, while still being a throwback to the socially conscious sci-fi of Asimov and Heinlein.
