As long as the graphics aren't "cartoony", such as the latest price of Persia, then the graphics don't matter to me.

Gameplay > Story > graphics.
I actually prefer "cartoony" graphics to more realistic graphics sometimes. They usually are much more appealing. It's one of the reasons I prefer LoZ:Wind Waker over LoZ:Twilight Princess.

Though I have seen little of the new Prince of Persia game so we may be using different definitions of "cartoony".

I don't think we should really care about graphics. But RE5 was good and made me say "I like these graphics!" but when a game has graphics that just suck, its just a small thing that makes the game a bit worse. Its not important, but its something game developers should at least try to do right.

Graphics matter but not as much as the gameplay.
I'll take decent graphics if the game plays well better than I can take great graphics with poor gameplay.
You might want to add an option or two to the poll to reflect this not-very-uncommon opinion in it.

I always feel that the people who make a game with anything less than life like graphics (apart from things like Sonic and Mario cos that would be a little weird) are just saving money, time or effort.

Not necessarily. They could be trying to give their game a distinctive art style. Though you are probably thinking of low-budget shovel ware games, in which cheap cartoony graphics are often used to reduce the amount of money and time spent on graphics.

Graphics don't matter; art style matters.

A game can look like crap but have a good art direction. This is the reason why pixel-based games still hold a special place in my heart. Everything feels like it has a purpose. The original Zelda was hideous by today's standards, but the fact that the game had an art direction still makes it memorable (along with the fantastic level design and game play for its time)

Well, kind of. I like good graphics, I don't mind bad graphics, I just don't like games that ATTEMPT to have good graphics but end up looking bad. And sucking. (a la Haze).

They may be trying to make it stand out with art, but why not make it stand out for gameplay?

I will never buy or play a game with prince of Persia style graphics, borderlands looks guilty of it as well.

Graphics? Not at all. Nicer is better, but it doesn't influence whether I'll buy a game or not.
Art direction, now, that's a different story...

That's just stupid. You're passing up great games because they're cel-shaded?

Graphics don't make a bad game good, they make a good game better.

I don't buy a game based on graphics, but I do like to have good graphics (they can't hurt).

It's dumb to call graphics COMPLETELY inconsequential, but they'll never save a bad game.
Still, like some have said, I'm more concerned about interesting art direction. Make it look nice, not realistic.

I recently got GTAIII, VC, and SA on my computer, and I am currently working on III. Great game. Obviously bad graphics by today's standard, but I still love it to death. III is my favorite GTA, btw.

I'll compliment a game if it has good graphics, but i dont judge them for that, the gameplay is the important thing.

Hell, i'm mad i dont have my SNES anymore.

For every "great" game I miss I get about 3 or 4 I can stand to look at.

I have seen prince of Persia being played and I am not missing much there.

Borderlands doesn't seem that great.

I can give you my views simply by saying I love, and I mean LOVE PS1 games. Nearly all of them. I wish we could go back to those days when there were a million and 1 games out for a console.

This 100%.

They don't make or break a game.
I still play games that lots of people think look horrible.
But sometimes when it's really good, it's just like, WOW, you know?

Like when Metroid Prime first came out, or when Shenmue came out...The human mind is stimulated by pretty, shiny stuff, and yeah.

And interesting art styles can really make a game awesome.

ie: Jet Grind Radio wouldn't have been as fun/unique/cool if it wasn't cel-shaded and high-contrast.

In a way? Like, I don't want 8-bit graphics, and I love Unchartered 2 because it is so beautiful, but I will pick gameplay first.

They said that half way through they tried it out, and stuck with it ever since.

So...
