No, the only metric by which I judge games is it's "fun-factor."
This. A thousand times, this. If it's fun, who cares what graphics, game-play, OR story offer? If it's super fun then I love it. Some people need those things in order to have fun, but in the end it's all about the fun. FUN!!

Graphics can make a game with good gameplay and story better, but they are not necessary. However a bad game with good graphics is not improved.

Graphics are important, but so are story, gameplay, sense of fun, immersion. Great graphics but everything else being shitty results in a pretty shitty game. OTOH, Crappy graphics can bring down an otherwise perfect game.

Of course, I tend to judge older games by the graphics of their era, not by those today.

Ummm, of course? Name a game(thats not retro) that would be better if the graphics were toned down.

I can't really say yes or no, but as long as the gameplay is good and the graphics are good enough that I can easily tell what everything is at a glance, I'm fine. I'm still OK with the Halo 1 graphics and stuff, but if I can't tell the difference between a person and a box, I'm not going to enjoy it.

Having a distinct art style doesn't necessarily mean the game play is bad. Take for example TF2. The game play is solid and entertaining, and the exaggerated cartoony art style featured in the game only further enhances the experience. It's strange that you say Borderlnads values it's appearance over it's game play; from what I've heard the game play is the most important and well-designed part of the game. Again, it's distinct art style only serves to enhance the experience.
I never said a "cartoony" style makes a game bad or effect gameplay (or story) in anyway, what I am saying is I won't buy or play a game with this style of graphics cos I personally don't like them.

I think borderlands could have been much better if they had used realistic graphics and proportions (like C.O.D) rather than the style that they chose to do it in.
I disagree. Originally, Borderlands was going to be the way you just described. But down the line they changed the art style, and it made the game far more appealing to me.

But I guess this all just has to do with personal taste anyways.

I mean, sometimes I don't mind the graphics like games like Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy Color. That games is dope! As long as the graphics are ok and not total crap, I'm fine. At least as good as Half-Life 1 graphics are fine.

Usually, i do like knowing what i'm looking at while i play (unlike atari games which you must use your imagination)

Of course graphics matter, why would I be motivated to play newer games if not for the better graphics? It doesn't matter how much people want to seem retro and cool by claiming they don't matter, the fact is that they do.

Would call of duty 4 been a sucess without stellar graphics? Fuck no, the gameplay didn't have anything special over other comparable games. Are good graphics limited to new games? I personally really like the style of LoZ:OoT, is it wrong for me to say the graphics are good? Likewise I'd argue the graphics in GTA:chinatown wars are better than those in GTA:4, because I felt they added more to the game.

Ultimately, I feel that games with poor graphics lack motivation on the part of the devs, and if the devs aren't motivated to make it aestheticially pleasing (which is different from photo-realistic) then I have no interest in it.

Pretty visuals won't save a poor game, but they can make a mediocre game great

Shiny does not make a good game. Particularly the shiny gray-brown bloom that seems to be all the rage nowadays. Peel away the sparkle and you're left with the true measure of the game, and that's what I look at. The plot of FF6 was a hell of a lot more interesting than FF12. Even FF7, in its blocky, badly translated glory is a far step above any of the double digit numbers.

Graphics do matter but not much really, for me gameplay and story come before anything else

well I would have to say that graphics do not matter to me because I like text based games as much as any other, but at the same time, a texed based platformer would be rather hard to do, and using the letters as characters and platforms, doesn't count, so I think graphics are an important feature in many games, but the quality of them is like icing on the cake. Icing is good, but I don't want to eat a pile of dung just because it's covered in icing, and superb cake can be eaten with sparing amounts of icing, so that's how I feel about graphics.

Graphics are the third least important aspect of any game except perhaps Mario Paint, just above music and sound effects. Gears of War (-e.g.) looks like crap, but who cares? It's got 3 decent levels to play. Mass Effect (-e.g.) has beautiful environments everywhere, but who cares? It's as boring as staring at a blank wall. The ~5th best game ever made [http://adom.de/] doesn't even have graphics.

Why don't we get in-betweens or all-inclusives? So limited.

I prefer if you can make the game fun first, but looking nice is a plus.
