I rarely initiate, it's mostly people adding me.

It's not so much a "I keep contact with these users" list as much as it's "a list of users that were impressed by me at some point or other".

For talking with people outside of threads, I use User Groups.

I'm too socially awkward even on the internet to communicate with those on my friends list, so that would be a "no" from me.

Shame, i added some interesting people but ultimately can't escape the feeling of awkwardness when i do try and make an effort in communicating with them in pms and such xP

So really the friends list is just a way for me to track users i've found interesting or had some nice points of view, or that i might have bonded with over a certain issue.

Yeah, but only with people I generally talk to a lot, or people I had fun talking to.

I tend to do it primarily so I have quicker access to their profile to pm them. I'm lazy and don't want to type into the new message box XD

I friend people I typically talk to and enjoy chatting with, I talk to many of my friends here in user groups almost daily, best place to talk is user groups (particularly ones like the Forum Games Group or the Injustice League)

Especially the injustice league!

We're always looking for new meat people to just chill with. :)

I have have a few people on it, but I don't really communicate with any of 'em. I'm not exactly the most social person even on the Internet.

I have 29 friends on here, all but 5 I've met IRL. Even then most of those added me, and I refriended them after that. I only ever did a friending spree just after last years Expo, since I met a lot of nice people there and wanted to make sure I could remember who I met.

Yeah.

It doesn't actually do anything though. I just use it as a way of saying, "Hey, I think you're alright."
Pretty much. It's an "I like you and the things you say" button.

If people are going to use it for more than that then more power to them.

Now if I wanted to be cruel I could point out that perhaps it's not the site that's the problem in this equation :p

I've mostly just ignored the feature, hence I don't have many "friends". I feel like it's an attempt to make this site more social-networky. I don't know much about social networks, I've never used any, so I have no idea if it's succeeding or not.

To me the concept of friendship is too complex and nebulous to be accurately represented through a simple datapoint on a web server.

I add to my friends if the person has said something really insightful or well thought out. I also do it if they're a reasonable person or have earned my respect. I guess I kind of use it as a way to make myself keep in mind, "This person is deserving of my respect, I should try to listen to and consider what they say even if I don't agree with it."

I got lots of friends in my list, but I don't do anything with it.
You can add me if you want and I'll be your friend :p

Eh, I don't really care. I never go and try to add people as friends, personally. I'm not even sure what criteria would have me do so. Even so, I'm awful at casual conversation, so User Groups are something I keep away from. And those that I'm part of I'd feel almost bad intruding on. It's like trying to become part of a new social clique. Or something. I could be just overthinking things again.

Overall, I like the friends list, it's like a badge on your profile indicating how many people have acknowledged your existence.

I tend to only add friends who are good at debating here on the site. Or who are like minded in very specific ways. People who like Dead Rising or Halo, people who are respectful while debating rather than just raging like a petulant child; those are the people I would want to associate with on Escapist. Good conversation can be hard to find. So I try to keep up with those who offer it.

And yet you have mentioned them. How odd.

OT: I have added and been added by quite a few people here on the Escapist, but I generally never actually use the friends list for anything.

I probably don't use this site often enough. But you know what? I wouldn't mind getting to know a bunch of you. There are some pretty insightful here.

Not really, because it involves no consent by the other person. It just adds them to an arbitrary list.

But then again I haven't made any friends that I actually communicate with, on this site.

I usually add people I see often on the forums, don't know what to do with it yet, other than to send PM's from time to time.

I use it, I have people I consider my friends on it, but I also add people to it I respect, even if I don't think of them as friends. Someday I hope to gather up the courage to strike up a conversation with these people though, because I think we could be really good friends if we just had a chance to talk.

I post a fair amount here, nobody's added me as a friend, and I've never felt the need to add anyone.

It doesn't bother me :)

No, I tend to be one of those people who don't really get seen or heard that much, it doesn't really bother me that much.

Nope... Never had an invite, never added anyone...

Never really found anyone on here who is "friend" material... Seeing as all I really do is make one random forum post every now-and-then, and even then I'll be quoted once because I had the same view as someone else and then leave it at that...

Capthca: you rock!

really?
wow... Thanks Escapist!
