Poll: Do people even WANT sex in their video games?

Hello, Escapists.

For a long time it's always been a popular opinion that sex in video games is immature and infantile, only for titillation, or for the sake of a product or story being perceived as mature, adult, or realistic. Some people hang on to the thought that, if only sex was interwoven with the narrative, then will I accept it as not fanservice. I thought, perhaps people just don't like sex and sex will always be immature, but it would be considered prudish to admit so.

So I re-watched an episode of Extra Credits about sex in video games, and it was fine and all, but it wasn't actually about SEX... but rather sexuality, as in romantic relationships, which I mean, I think video games have already evolved as a medium to portray romantic relationships in an aesthetically pleasing manner, perhaps not to the degree we want, but come on, chances are it's a AAA shooter/rpg. But what about actual sex in video games?

Really, the only marker for a good sex scene is... it isn't controversial, like nobody cared to complain about it or mention it exists. Like when people talk about GoT they don't talk about the sex scenes, unless it is to complain or crack a joke.

Reason 1: It's Boring
Have you ever watched a kissing scene where you felt nothing for the romance, or worse it was gross, like something from PrankInvasion? Now imagine sitting through even a 1 minute sex scene. Now I've played many a VN, and I could probably count the number of ones with sex scenes with two hands, maybe a foot. Yet I've only played one or two, which I actually read through and thought, "yes Sir Elton John, I can feel the love tonight." Basically, if it ain't your waifu, chances are you won't care.

Reason 2: Most are Unnecessary
Since VNs probably have the most sex, I'll be talking about those I've read threads on VN sites discussing whether sex was necessary in VNs, and the response is yes, but some are unnecessary. However, if you use the word "necessary", you might as well ask "Would you choose between having sex scenes or not having sex scenes?" Obviously the answer would be, I'd rather have sex scenes, because there is one I like or may like. Still, it's basically if it ain't your waifu, you won't care.

Reason 3: It's Too Much
Honestly kissing and hugging is more than enough to convey a sense of romance. Being sexually aroused is distracting, to say the least. If a video game is good enough to be porn to do you know what, then you want to do you know what.

For whatever reason, I found softcore scenes to be more romantic than hardcore scenes.

Reason 4: Humans are Sex-Negative
Besides humans, name me a animal that has sex and masturbates in private. I think the shame of sex is universal. The word "awkward" is frequently when used to describe sex scenes, perfectly describing a faux pas. Some of us are different, but generally, we don't like sex and sexuality in public situations. At least, we avoid bringing it up with randoms.

tl;dr
Video game sex will never mature because sex isn't mature at all. What people think is mature is basically a bunch of people implicitly agreeing X is tasteful and you nodding your head.

I personally don't, because there are kids in my house and blasting sex on a flatscreen with surround sound is not a good idea.

If that wasn't an issue, I still think I wouldn't anyway. Why would I want to see people having sex? Like, out of porn? As in, without the purpose of being aroused?

I think they can be done well, such as the sex scene in Wolfenstein TNO.

I don't, but not for any puritanical reasons or worry. Simply because they're always terribly written, horribly acted and animated like that scene from Team America.
This one:

Its just embarrassing, stops the game dead and gives those R34 channers too many ideas. And I think we can all agree, those are bad things.

In some video games yes. Just like I'm fine with sex scenes in some movies. My main issue with them is that they're pretty reliably done badly or put in for no reason. I like them well enough as optional scenes as part of romance subplots but they generally need better direction and writing.

Video games at least have the advantage of being able to make things totally optional. 'If you want a sex scene with these two characters, you need to purposefully trigger it' instead of it being pushed at your face like in a movie.

No reason sex scenes would really need to be totally explicit. Leaving more to the imagination/implying things works well for non-porn sex scenes.

I don?t mind it being implied for narrative purposes, just not ?heavily,? hence my vote for fade to black. It usually comes across as silly and uncomfortably voyeuristic; I?ve never seen it done classily or where it seemed to serve more purpose than nerd porn (looking at you, Mass Effect.) Heavy Rain was the absolute WORST, though; you spend the entire cinematic experience controlling damn-near every minute action of these four characters, so when it came to the ?interactive? sex scene, it felt like I was helping my quadriplegic friend have sex with his girlfriend by grabbing his hips and thrusting in and out for him. It was embarrassing and I just wanted it to be over.

Well not in every game, but some can have it. It's not always good in fact it often can be very bad, but if we only let games do what they are good at then we would have nothing but tetris and pong.

I think some games can benefit from clearly indicating characters had sex or are going to have sex, but I do not think seeing the act of sex has ever benefited a game. When the act of sex benefits the game then it should be included, but something beyond sex probably needs to happen. Either part of the plot happens, which requires like, a murder/attempted murder, or something said during that is relevant, though Im sure many of these moments could happen before or after too.

The most I could ever imagine is some GTA minigame where you level up something through sex. Or it heals you like in 3.

Basically I think "fade to black" is more than enough for most situations. I do think characters clearly having it during the game is fine though, cause too many heroes die virgins.

I'm not opposed to it if handled properly and not clashing with what the game is trying to convey.

Wolfenstein: The New Order had two sex scenes in the form of cut scenes and they were both excellently done. It was presented as two characters enjoying oneanother while they still have the chance.

It's easy to look at sex in games as something for the sake of titilation and nothing else -- which in and of itself isn't bad either -- but that doesn't mean it can't also be used to explore certain facets of someone's character or humanity. Sex is part of our nature afteral.

No. Like the OP mentioned it always comes off as awkward, contrived and immature. I think games are great at conveying messages and themes but not at depicting sex or even the dynamics of relationships or heavy handed melodrama. It just always comes across as stupid. My favorite storylines in games have always been about more indirect styles of storytelling; games that don't spoonfed you the narrative but uses the medium's strength to discover and unravel the story for yourself(Silent Hill 2, MGS2, Souls, Bloodborne etc). Witcher 3 is the noticeable exception but even here I try to avoid the sex scenes wherever I can. :p

Most games try to imitate a 'cinematic' style of storytelling which is bad enough but sex is the absolute worst depiction of what games just absolutely aren't suited for. It has nothing to do with 'sex negative'(our predisposition towards sex and emotional affiliation are as hardwired into our instincts as the need to eat, sleep and shit after all) but everything what plays into a certain mediums strength or weakness. I'd say if you crave unrealistic relationship drama and lame sex scenes there is tons and tons of Hollywood garbage to satiate your needs. :p

edit: or Bioware games.

Like any other aspect of a game, you can't say "people want this" or "people don't want this".

Sex is just one more thing, if done well it can be good, if done badly it sucks, and various people with various tastes will have various subjective opinions about it without facts playing any role in those opinions, due to emotional reasons, because game enjoyment is derived from an emotional part of the brain.

You may have more trouble finding people willing to accept that they want sex or be more willing to reject it so as to not be stigmatized by the perception of being someone who needs to see sex in games cause that is their only way to experience it, you may have people who have religious objections and whatnot, you may have people who think sex is just boring and they're asexual or whatever, but in the end sex is just one more thing like bikes or eating minigames or flying robots. Depending on the game, it can be done well, hence there is no reason to limit the options of people making games by declaring that this or that thing is definitively "not wanted" in such clear terms.

The poll needs an "all of the above" option, since I have no specific preference but if it was done well I'd be open to any kind of sex in a game, from none at all to BDSM parties.

No option for "Don't care either way", but that's my answer. I don't mind a little sex in my story, as sex is part of life, and games are showing the life of a handful of people. I also don't really care if it's not in the game either. If it makes sense as part of the narrative, fine. If it's shoehorned in, in a very obvious way just to make the game "mature", then I give less of a shit.

It also depends on how the relationship is implemented. Bioware really annoyed me with the DA 2 system, where even politely declining a character's sexual advance to you, garnered a major loss of positive relationship traits with them. Which is bullshit, as I've lived the very situation they tried to simulate, (gay guy asking a straight guy if they wanted to be in a relationship, and politely declining, stating that I'm not gay), and the gay guy was perfectly fine with it. But in the game, he was super hurt, and acted all pissy, and I took a huge friendship hit with him. Which, in my experience of this happening 4 different times, in all 4 cases, the situation ended amicably, with a little bit of embarrassed laughter, and we were still friends. So, their simulation, as far as I can state from imperical evidence, is completely unrealistic.

That's an example of shitty sex/romance implementation. Sometimes it's done well, sometimes it's not. But really I don't care either way. The voyeur in me enjoys watching people get busy, but the story-hound in me gets annoyed if it's completely, obviously gratuitous.

if the story calls for it I guess it's fine. If movies can have sex scene, what's wrong with games having them?
As long as it's treated the same way it gets treated in movies (it's not porn or pandering).

I'm ok with sex in my games but it has to have meaning. None of this "casual hookup at the club" crap that Bioware pulls off.

That's funny, because I find Bioware games to have the oposite problem. Despite only having an ONS once, fuckers still act like we're in love or something.

"Oh, I just find myself thinking of you so much, but even though I should stay focused on the mission, I just feel so drawn towards you completly".

I mean we only had sex once you stupid bint, I guess casual sex means absolutely nothing to Bioware, but the romances are just so bizarre. You'd think people who're in love who'd have sex atleast a few times, but everyone seem to have a motto to only drap their drawers right before the final mission.

Eh, I wouldn't call it 'casual hookup at the club" unless you mean Jack from ME 2. They do at least have you in theory, go through a harrowing, life and death ordeal with your prospective love interest. Casual hookup at the club is what Saints Row 4 did. xD

I still have nightmares of those cringey puppet sex scenes from Dragon Age: Origins. If a games plot finds sex absolutely necessary, then fade to black is perfectly fine thanks... although I do have to admit the goddamned unicorn in Witcher 3 was a scene of beauty.

Saints Row 4 also had the surprisingly touching Kinzie romance.

So I guess they're not all bad, just mostly bad. Kinda like in TV and movies now that I think about it.
