Movies I typically say 5 years, unless it's a classic like Citizen Kane. Outside from the classics, I feel like if people haven't seen a film in 5 years then they simply aren't interested enough to care.

Video games and books are a different matter though, I unfortunately know the FFVII spoiler and the Shadow of the Colossus spoiler, amongst others, but I go out of my way to avoid book spoilers.

I feel like, since there are so many books and video games, and, in my experience, aren't the regular topic of discussion among friends quite the same way that movies are, there is no statute of limitations on them. Everybody has different tastes, and people get around to books and games in their own time, so why ruin the fun

I don't really see what the problem is with people getting spoilered. Like, I don't get the whole "It's ruined now!" thing once someone hears a spoiler. I've enjoyed plenty of things where I've known the ending in advance, and it hasn't lessened the thrill or experience for me. If I know I'm late to things, then I don't expect people to keep it secret from me. I also tend to figure that, "If I already know this spoiler without having watched/read/played this, then it's probably common knowledge."

Still, though, there was a big fight over spoilers in the last fandom I was in (for things completely unrelated to the fandom), so I've tried to be more sensitive about spoilers ever since then. But, I figure, if it's pushing five years since the thing ended, then getting upset over being spoiled is a little over-sensitive. And I say this as someone who frequently watches things I was way too young to have seen the first time around.

I really don't care that I know the ending in advance to shows I've just started watching or books I've just started reading. Knowing the pretty infamous endings to Rear Window and Psycho in advance didn't make them any less tense or thrilling. But I guess that's just me. Some people seem to get really upset about this, so I suppose it's best to be respectful and mindful of that.

I find this kind of funny because I got some angst pointed at my direction over spoiling that
You lose and the planet is taken over by the enemy
back when it was in development and the anticipation was brewing. I don't really feel sorry for them because even I, the ardent Halo-disliker that I am even knew that Reach was the Halo universe's equivalent of the Alamo. It was, correct me if I'm wrong even mentioned in the very first game!

well i say, that if someone doesnt want to get "spoiled" then he/she should get out of the way of anything that has to do with that particular thing...so in a sense its a completely personal choice, not something forced. on the other hand, there are those guys who drives a car and passes you shouting "dumbledore dies". thats just pure bad luck.

I think people are being generous, I'd give it about a month, them screw the spoilers. Anyone that really cared has had plenty of time to go find this out for themselves, anyone that doesn't care will forget, and if for whatever reason their interest in the material is stirred they probably won't remember my post anyway.

I had a friend freak out because I spoiled the ending of The Tudors... The Tudors being a show which closely follows the life of HENRY THE VIII, one of the most famous rulers in European history. Needless to say I didn't feel especially bad. There has to be SOME statute of limitations on this stuff. Seen The Passion yet?

JESUS DIES

How about the 300?

LEONIDAS DIES

Oh, and don't forget Band of Brothers
HITLER DIES

I hope so. Like, for example, last week I had a conversation with my gaming friends about Resistance 2. I mentioned how

At the end, Nathan hale gets shot and killed by Capelli

And one of my friends got really mad because he never got around to finishing the game. Once that much time has passed you just figure noone cares after a while. Resistance is actually a weird example, at the VGA's, they spoiled the end to R2 after the trailer for R3 played. On TV. With no warining.

Just my two cents.

Luke I am your father.

I got complained at for spoiling Final Fantasy V recently, despite its being released before I (along with a few others here, presumably) knew FF existed. So I'm pretty careful, and try to ask if someone's already seen/played/read something before.

I warn about spoilers if the spoiler is a major plot twist. I warn if a post has spoilers since I didn't know how to use the spoiler drop downs (see below). Until now, that is.

Jesus dies.

Sorry, had to put that...
Hate to break it to ya, but...

He comes back.

Also, I saw The Sixth Sense for the first time last year, and I still liked the movie even though I knew how it ended. I guess that means I don't mind spoilers as long as they are pop culture knowledge already.

With movie spoilers, I say about 5 years until they're not worth hiding anymore.
Games, a bit longer, you never know who still plays it, so about 8-10 years to be safe, unless EVERYONE knows what's gonna happen (a la Halo Reach).
Books...
3 tops.

I had a situation in which I accidentally revealed a certain major event in Death Note
L dies
to which he responded,
Wait, L dies?
countered with a succinct "No"
but obviously that plot twist was ruined. so i'm usually careful about it. and now if someone reveals spoilers, we bring that back up and the world is right again. And in the matter of spoilers ruining things, sometimes it sucks, sometimes it's all right. Example, when somebody told me the plot twist to BioShock, it ruined part of the game. But it was still amazing.

Edit: Yay! 27th post! Matches my number! (which is actually obsolete as I use a different tag now, but what can you do?)

If someone spoils a book, tv episode, movie or game that I planned to watch/read/play/masturbate to, I will MURDER them.

So I'm careful myself. Do unto others and all that, right?

There's no way people don't know the classics, so those are fair game. Basically, if Robot Chicken, Family Guy, etc. hasn't done it, tread lightly.

If in person, I ask the person I'm speaking too if they are planning on playing the game for themselves before I spoil it.

On a forum, I put most major plot devices in games, movies and books in spoilers.

I'd say for movies, you should never spoil anything.
But for games, wait at least 3+ months before you start spoiling anything.

i say anything from this generation of consoles use the tags unless it is common knowledge. movies give it a month or two after it comes to dvd, but it never hurts to ask the people or use spoiler tags
