As I graduated high school and enter university, a single thought keeps popping up in my head. The thought that, when I finish my degree, I'll be working (most likely) a 9-5 job for the rest of my life until retirement. As a result, this depresses me greatly and I realise that people either tend to accept this or constantly seek a form of escapism (Yeah I know, posting it on a site called The Escapist, -100 unintended pun points).

So fellow people, do you accept this as your fate or do you deny it?

Well I'm currently in high school so yeah, I do have to accept that I'm going to have to study my ass off during the next three years and that for better or for worse, it will shape how I live the rest of my life.

I'm already on my way to retirement at 40~45 so I'm quite accepting of my lot in life.

I would say learning how to survive and be happy on a low income has been the best thing that ever happened to me.

I still live in a dream world, so it's pretty clear that I don't accept reality.

Let's just hope that doesn't come crashing down too hard and too fast all at once.

I am going to live life the way I see want to or I am going to die, those are the only two options I can see for myself.

Well I'm happy with what I do in life so yes I accept reality. But then I also love escaping into video games, although I don't play them in order to forget reality but rather because I simply enjoy playing them.

You know what, after five years of being in art college... I'm almost looking forward to a 9-5 job. However, I'm hoping that I can work part time, while doing art and design freelancing jobs the other half of the week. But either way, what I'm most looking forward to is earning my own wage and having my own home.

I'm a simple gal with simple goals.

I don't know.

I think in order to accept my reality I first need to comprehend my reality. And the moment that happens I'll probably have a meltdown... What little of me there is to melt.

I accept it simply because it's what I've been given, but I'm by no means content with it.

Similarly to the OP, I recently began university, and I can't stop thinking that once I finish there, I'll get a full-time job, get married, have kids, retire and die. The thing that annoys me the most is that that is considered a good life, or at least not a waste of a life.

Since we've created so many ways to escape reality, I can therefore conclude that reality is really quite shit to begin with.

Of course I accept it, especially since I have no major things to be concerned about so far.
But as you said, you're on a site that has the word Escapism in it so yeah I seek escapism, I don't understand how the first option in the poll can be so big since basically watvhing TV shows, movies, playing games, reading hell even thinking on something that isn't real is sort of escapism. Pretty hard not to these days.

EDIT: read first option wrong! my bad, it can be pretty even with option 2 and 4 now :D

That phrase was actually invented by the Fourth Doctor; "I deny this reality. The reality is a computation matrix". It was rephrased later in 1984 in The Dungeonmaster to the exact quote Adam Savage popularized.

Myself, I'm more of a Philip K. Dick person. Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn?t go away.

But mind, that does not mean I accept something such as fate. Too much stuff to do and experience, I have a lot of options. A job is just something that pays the bills, first and foremost, it's good if you enjoy what you do (luckily, I mostly do).

I try to keep a balance between the two. You know, be a realist here and there, while being an optimist at other times. I know I will most likely become a major player in the world, but a man can dream.

Working a 9-5 job the rest of your life isn't all it has to be. I'm always trying to improve myself, trying out new hobbies, getting reintroduced to old ones, I'm always drawing to improve my art, I taught myself basic origami. I want to learn Spanish (but that might not happen), I want to get back into Martial arts (but that might also not happen), I want to make a web-comic (but that probably won't happen). Just because your working a day job doesn't mean you should resign yourself to only that until the day you retire (or die, whichever comes first).

OT: I guess in that sense I haven't accepted reality, I never have and I never will.

Why not just try for a full time in-house art job?
You still get to do art and it's a much more reliable paycheck than freelancing.

I guess to a certain degee. I mean we still need to have some form of escapism in our daily lives.

I intend to make whatever I don't like in reality a mere fictional being and what I want in my fantasy to become real.

But for the most part, reality sucks big floppy donkey dick.

What you call reality is someone else's dreamworld and vice versa...

I was really disappointed this wasn't a debate about religion :c
