Scientifically speaking humans are apes. Actually we are members of a group of apes known as the "Great Apes"

[Source] http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-great-apes.htm

But I know there is a lot of argument about wether or not humans are actually apes, because of religious views or what not.

In my opinion humans are just extremely intelligent apes, and science agrees with me, but what do you guys think?

EDIT: Wow, I used the word "apes" quite a lot there.

EDIT 2: I am not asking if you believe in evolution, I am asking if you believe apes and humans should be classified together? Are we apes?

Not even. It's, "Do I agree with this current taxonomic assignment?" Might as well ask if humans are vertebrates or placental mammals.

Technically, the great apes are classified under Homo-(insert second name here, IE. Erectus, Sapien, etc.) so we're a class unto ourself.

First, let me say that I am Christian, so please, no one say I'm anti-religion. But I'm rational about it, and when you get down to it, the evidence that the metaphorical creation story of Adam and Eve really happenned is basically "Because we say so." Evolution is true, there's mountains of evidence.

Yyyyyyyeeeess.

If you mean "Do I believe in evolution" then yes.

It's been pretty much proven at this point.

Religion is not science. It has nothing to do with determining species. If there are arguments, they are scientific.

Why would I waste belief on fact?

No need to believe in what is true.

As the years go by we will be less animal, as to almost find no similarity between apes and us. But, yes, I absolutely believe that our biological ancestors were apes. Mine was a cute monkey named Bobo :D

To clarify this, humans did not evolve from apes. Human and CHIMPANZEES share a common ancestor from Asia. These findings are fairly recent, within the past year, so I can understand very few people outside the archaeological community knowing this.

Yes, I'll side with science. I hold nothing against religion, but time and time again it has proven to be a bit of a ... roadblock in terms of scientific advancement (Galileo anyone?)

Do I believe humans are apes? No.
Do I believe humans evolved from apes? Yes. (Although I'm pretty sure we didn't evolve from them so much as had a common anscester.)

I wonder where we are meant to be. Since we no longer have all the ape hair. Which climate do we belong?

Aaah who cares...put the heating on B-D

We are apes, there is no question about it. Science isn't about believe, it's about facts, and in this case the facts (or rather the classification) says we are apes.

No, we evolved from relatives of the apes, not actual apes.

The ape thing is a strawman for religous people trying to disprove evolution.

A point of confusion seems to be that apes = a single species. I think a lot of people mistake apes to mean either chimpanzees or gorillas rather than a large group of species including extinct species.
