Of course, JRPG's focus on having a good story, while WRPG's focus on making the world bigger and emptier.

Though I'm a PC only gamer, so I don't get to play many JRPGs.

There is obviously a difference to anyone paying even a minor amount of attention, one of them contains a "J".

Honestly the things people come up with.
Nice post. I did think this like.

OT: No. You should be asking the question: "Derrr, is there a difference between Japanese culture and British culture?" The "derr" might be over the top but I'm over it.

I'm having trouble discerning whether or not this was a genuine question or a failed attempt at trolling. If it's the former, then I have to say that CiB42 pretty much summed it up nicely. If it's the later, then we are clearly in need of more fan boy rage from either side to salvage this.

I vote yes, but I still like both. I personally don't see why JRPGs are called RPGs, they don't really have many roleplaying features at all, whereas normal RPGs usually have the whole character customization thing.
Not that I don't like JRPGs. Middle-generation Final Fantasy will always be legendary.

I see two problems with this thread...

- Wrong question: JRPG is a type of RPG, so you can't compare, it's like asking: "do you believe there is a difference between an apple and a piece of fruit." A more accurate question would be: "do you believe there's a difference between JRPG, WRPG, MMORPG and, I dunno, Action/RPG?" Or something like that

- Partially incorrect argument: The "branching story versus linear story" is quite correct, but the "teen angst/annoyance versus serious and dark" isn't. Anyone who ever played a game from Atlus will know what I mean (or Sacnoth/Nautilus for that matter). Instead of comparing atmosphere, compare gameplay mechanics: walking around freely, often using a skill tree or something likewise versus battling in group, often time controlling all characters.
