Depends on the game and character. I have more than a few alchemists in WoW because there's always a market from the "why make when I can buy" crowd plus there's always fun stuff in alchemy. It's not just heath and mana potions.

It would be a much better thread (and poll) if it wasn't so blatently biased. I get that you have an actual topic that you are interested in but its fucking stupid to voice your opinion in the actual poll question. If you want to know what people think and like, maybe you should consider not being so damned insulting.

Some people do always want to be a badass. They have trouble empathising with people who find it boring to do the same thing every time.

Also, why buy the milk when the cows are free?... or something about how it's cheap and easy to just make your own.
Depends on the system. some of the games I've played have made it so much easier to just buy them. If the ingredients are rare and difficult to farm, or it's just tedious to get enough cows, I'd rather just buy the damn things.

Honestly, did it change your answer?

I gather the ingredients because I'm OCD about picking up everything I possibly can.. I just couldn't leave a plant unharvested... However I pretty much never make or use potions, that just doesn't really interest me.

Well, in Skyrim, I do gather ingredients, but I rarely make potions.

Dungeons usually give me enough of them.

In Skyrim I tried out making poisons for a while, then gave up and decided it was more fun to bury a pile of sticks in my battle opponent's face than off them slowly with intricate secretions whilst I sat watching from afar. I also didn't like carrying round pound upon pound of ingredients after a long trek in the wilderness, all that space could be full o' them draggin bowns!

I do like the more tactical side of potions. The "Use this potion to avoid hella damage".

But I don't really like potion crafting / alchemy. It's a lot of boring repetitive gathering and crafting. There needs to be more fun involved. Like if there were poisonous plants or plants that tried to eat you, or a full alchemy lab minigame where you have to carefully mix those highly explosive ingredients or they'll blow up and you'll lose about 1/4 of your health. Only add a twist, in order to gain "Explosion Mastery" you have to blow up your lab a lot, or to gain "Toxicity Mastery" you have to get poisoned a lot. That would make for much more interesting gameplay then it is currently.

It's usually cheaper than buying potions.

That's more or less why.

And it's fun just eating everything in Skyrim.

I actually enjoy collecting things and inventory management for some reason... however, the way I play doesn't generally necessitate potion use in combat (so "necessary potions" aren't a thing. If I planned the encounter badly enough to get hurt that badly, I call it a failure and reload). I usually make 'em and sell em for enough money to buy better equipment.
