On proper forums such as this I try to do my best, but for chats and the like I don't make a great effort to spell check, capitalise or punctuate.

Yes. I do bother.
It's how I can keep track on how "good" my spelling is. Mostly when I'm speaking in English anyway.
It's just easier to read when all the words are correctly set on a sentence.
I don't really mind minor mistakes but when it gets to the point it's hard to understand a single idea of what the person is saying, I just don't know what to think.

With that said, I hope I didn't make any enormous error on my post.

I don't want to become like an average internet douche, who 5p33ks w1th h41f h15 l3tt3r5 a5 numb3r5.
And with that remark, I have officially become the biggest hypocrite on the internet.

Read this sentence and take a guess at where I stand on this subject.

I don't really understand why people don't bother with punctuation, it takes pretty much no more time than writing without it and it makes your writing more legible and you look smarter.

i am very irritated with the illegibility of some people (see Youtube comments)and their surprising inability to write coherent sentences; so I ask you, do you bother writing properly on the internet?
Oh, and yes, I did read the forum guidelines on this sort of thing..
My mind just keeps zooming in on that first letter you've got there...

Yes, I think proper punctuation and spelling are essential to making a point, otherwise you're discrediting yourself. Granted I find punctuation to be much less important than spelling and grammar, but that's most because of how easy it is to spell check nowadays, punctuation on the other hand is relatively hard to learn (or so I've found anyway). When playing games I don't think its terribly important, but I do dislike it when people spell things horribly for the sake of spelling them so.

On forums, I always try to use proper grammar and punctuation as best I can. On IRC and MSN, I tend to use less punctuation, and a lot of sentence fragments. I never shorten words or use textspeak though, because that just irritates me.

He was making fun of you because you don't start sentences with capital letters.

OT: I really would like to use punctuation correctly(,) but sadly I don't really know when to use a comma. Didn't pay attention in school I guess.

No. Not at all. I try my darndest to avoid correct punctuation, spelling and grammar; i fail at it.
Except the capitalization of "i" - i've never understood the need to have non-contextual emphasis on yourself.

Yes. Whenever I speak, I always use correct punctuation, even in text messages. I like things to be neat and correct and can't stand bad grammar.

I like to use good punctuation when I write and post comments on the internet. I want people to understand what I am posting and also because I can't stand bad punctuation.

Yeah, I do. Capitalization and punctuation both. Not because it wouldnt be coherent otherwise, but when I read people who dont spell or capitalize correctly, it makes it very difficult to take that person seriously for me. They just instantly come across as lazy and unintelligent.

Youtube comments fuck me off more for their ridiculous content, but yes I do use punctuation. At the moment it makes it easier to fill out job applications properly and suchlike, as I am used to typing using punctuation. So there's a pretty good reason to do so!

As often as possible. On the net for sure I'll use grammar and punctuation as much as I can - it's partly because I like to think that if I write a coherent message then others may just take the time to read it, even if it is a "wall o' text" (though as a far as I'm concerned when it comes to "walls" then I'm more likely to read them as it shows to me that they actually have a point worth reading).

About the only time when I'll shorten messages by writing like a four year old is when I'm writing an SMS and I want to get it all into one message. So apart from the odd text message and the occasional spelling mistake I'll always try my best to write something in proper English.

And also, just because this is the Escapist I should imagine that the vast majority of people replying will say they use proper grammar - it's one of the big attractions of the site.

Yes, I can't stand it when people don't use puntuation 'cause with or without a comma or another form of puntuation a sentence can mean something different than how you ment it!

I also think it is good practice 'cause teenagers are on the internet alot but if they don't use puntuation or use text language then when it comes to writng essays they won't be as well versed in useing the whole keyboard instead of just a few letters.

If you have a proper keyboard in front of you I think that you should use it!

Yes. Even in texts, I spell everything correctly and make it as grammatically perfect as I can. I'd hate to look like some Neanderthal moron who can't grasp the fact that 'you' has 3 letters.
This. A thousand times, this.

I generally try to have correct punctuation when I'm typing on the internet but I will slip up sometimes, like forget to capitalize I's or when to put comma's etc. On Msn I type the same but I use things like, Idk, tbh and so on.

Yes. Mostly in the hope that you people will think I'm not a moron.

Which I'm obviously not.

....

Besides, it's just polite.

Absolutely. It's necessary in writing, emails, text and forums. Punctuation is there to be used to make yourself more easily understood. I don't understand why people wouldn't use it. You just end up looking like a pill otherwise.
