I buy games for the gameplay first, story second, extras third and multiplayer last.

I get my games for the thrilling campaign and story. With very few exceptions, multiplayer is just a nice treat for when I've completed the campaign.

If video games were bicycles:
The gameplay is the wheels, frame and seat(the main structure)
The singleplayer is the pedals (allows the game to move forward)
And the multiplayer is the tassels on the handlebars. Pretty, and may make the bike better if you like that sort of thing, but unnecessary overall.
Not a well-refined metaphor, but I think it works.

For me it's mainly story in solo and co-op to play with my husband and sister.

I don't have the time to spend online with other people (I do that in MMOs to get my fix).

That depends.

Games like Mass Effect? It's all about the solo experience.

Games like Call of Duty? I couldn't give a shit about the single player campaign, I'm just here to frag dudes and troll 13 year old Americans.
This is exactly what I was going to say, except I like to troll Brits. Tea jokes NEVER get old!

story all the way. the only time I buy stuff for multiplayer is the once in a blue moon fighting game, and even that has to have a decent solo part.
Multiplayer is a way to fight out important decisions like what movie to watch or if its going to be chinese or pizza for tea (and so I have something competitive on hand if a mate is visiting, but even then we're more likely to play co-op)

Both, if I can. I'll usually get something if either is really, really good.

And I have the money. /unemployed.

It depends on the game. Dead Space 2, which did have multiplayer, for example I bought for the main story. However when buying MW:2 my main goal was to get the god awful single player out of the way, mostly for achievements, and play online with my friends.

Most of the time I won't ever buy a game solely on multiplayer alone. MW:2 was the only game I've ever bought with just multiplayer in mind.

Story Mode.
I don't really see the appeal in playing a game with a bunch of people that I don't even fucking know. Hell, I'm not all that inclined towards playing with people I do know.

dont give 2 shits about multiplayer as really only a diversion of single player which in my opinion is the meat of ANY game without it it is pretty boring. really multiplayer is just there to sink some time in and to give a reason for horrible single although homefront and BC2 did it well but story is a big thing it can make or break a game

Single player and split screen Co op or same console co op for me. I just don't like online gaming that much. bu it depends on the game. I liked Phantasy Star Online on my Dreamcast and I liked Demon Souls Online alot. I thought that game was very well done

For the majority of games, I buy them for the single player.

However, and I have no shame in admitting this, but I don't give two shits about CoD single player. I play that game solely for multiplayer.

Story. I play both, but I very rarely do any multiplayer until I've finished the story. I'm a bit of a lone wolf, me.
I'm pretty much here.

Multiplayer for me is almost universally something tacked on.

I pretty much just pretend that the multiplayer doesn't exist. The only games where I've even played co-op are Portal 2 and Saints Row 2, and I've played split-screen on a couple of occasions, but other than that it's all about the single player.
